You begin outside the courtroom, in the defendant's lobby. You are greeted by Apollo Justice, your fellow lawyer at the agency you work with. He's leading the defence on this case, and you're his assistant. Your client, Juniper Woods, appears. She's feeling nervous, as shown by her fits of coughing. Apparently she's under suspicion of having set the bomb that blew up Courtroom No. 4. Just as you prepare to enter the courtroom, though, Apollo faints from his injuries. There's no way he'll be able to defend anyone in this state, so you decide to take his place in the courtroom.
Trial begins[edit]
As usual, you're faced with the extra-arrogant Prosecutor Payne, who calls himself the "Rookie Humiliator". He gives his opening statement to the court. The bombing incident occurred yesterday in Courtroom No. 4, during a trial regarding another bombing. A bomb being presented as evidence exploded during the trial, but luckily everyone was evacuated before it went off, and no lives were lost, except for one - Detective Candice Arme, who was due to appear as a witness. Payne submits Arme's Autopsy Report and the Stuffed Animal Bomb to the Court Record. To open the Court Record and view evidence, press 
, or touch the "Court Record" button. Make sure to keep an eye on all the evidence that goes into the Court Record, especially when listening to witnesses' testimonies.
Juniper is called to the stand. She's still very nervous, so Payne spots a chance to show off how he earned his other self-appointed title, the "Defendant Humiliator". Payne says that Juniper had a motive for blowing up the courtroom - she's been arrested on false charges in the past, and so must bear some grudge against the legal system. He also claims to have "decisive evidence" regarding a unique aspect of the bomb used, and asks you to tell the court exactly what this was. Check the Court Record to find the answer - the bomb was inside a stuffed animal. Payne now presents his "decisive evidence": the tail of the stuffed animal. The stuffed animal in question is the "Phony Phanty", the mascot of a campaign to eliminate false evidence and charges. Its tail is made of vinyl, and this particular tail carries Juniper's fingerprints. The Phony Phanty Tail is added to the Court Record. This seems to be irrefutable evidence, but you can't just let them declare Juniper guilty...
Athena's nerves have gotten the better of her, and just as all seems lost, a familiar voice calls from the entrance to the courtroom... "Objection!" It's Phoenix Wright, making his triumphant return to the defence's bench! Phoenix claims that there are too many questions left unanswered, and the trial must continue. He requests that Juniper be allowed to stand down and gather herself in the lobby. Payne calls another witness to the stand. The witness, Ted Tonate, is a bomb disposal specialist with the police. He was in charge of the bomb during the trial in which it exploded. He was first on the scene after the explosion, and first to find the body. He gives his testimony regarding the moment of the explosion.
Tonate's Testimony: When the Bomb Went Off[edit]
- THE BOMB WAS ORIGINALLY DISARMED BY ME, THEN TRANSPORTED HERE AS EVIDENCE.
- BOMB NAME: HH-3000 OPERATED BY TIMER OR WITH A REMOTE
- I WAS WATCHING FROM THE GALLERY WHEN I SUDDENLY BECAME ALARMED.
- I SAW THAT THE BOMB'S TIMER WAS COUNTING DOWN.
Tonate produces a replica of the original bomb, and submits a photograph taken before the trial. He mentions that the bomb can be detonated remotely once it is armed. This information on the HH-3000 Bomb is added to the Court Record.
Time to begin your first cross-examination. You now have a chance to get an explanation of how cross-examining works from Phoenix. If you want to hear it, choose I'd better ask. If you're still confident in your abilities even after eight years out of the job, choose Nah, she'll be fine. Athena says that if you're struggling to find contradictions, and make too many mistakes, you can consult her by pressing 
when the "Consult" icon appears. If you consult her, she will tell you which statement she thinks is suspicious.
Cross-Examination: When the Bomb Went Off[edit]
Present the HH-3000 Bomb on the fourth statement. Tonate claims he saw the countdown, but this is clearly impossible - the bomb was hidden inside the stuffed animal! He now says that he actually heard the bomb's timer ticking, and was able to judge from that that the bomb had been armed. There's no way to disprove that now, though, so the Judge moves on to why the prosecution suspects Juniper. Payne says that Tonate saw the moment when she re-armed the bomb. Tonate brought the bomb to the defendant's lobby, so Apollo could inspect it. Juniper was waiting there at the time, to arm the bomb and steal the remote switch, according to Payne. The switch has been missing since then. The Missing Remote Switch is added to the Court Record. Tonate explains that the only time at which the bomb was removed was while it was being shown to Apollo in the defendant's lobby, so that was the only time at which it could have been rearmed. It couldn't have been done at any other time, since Tonate is the only person with access to the case. The Bomb Transport Case is added to the Court Record.
Payne recalls Juniper to the stand. Her condition doesn't seem to have improved since earlier. Athena says that Juniper's heart is crying out in fear, because of Payne's constant badgering of her. The Judge eventually puts a stop to it, and asks Juniper to give her testimony.
Woods' Testimony: When the Bomb Went Off[edit]
- Well, that day... *cough* I was watching from the gallery... *cough, cough*
- The bomb went off... *cough*
- *cough* And rubble started falling... It fell on top of me... *cough, cough*
Phoenix says that, since Juniper is struggling to put her emotions into words, this is the perfect time to use Athena's "power". Athena has a strengthened sense of hearing, which enables her to hear a person's true emotions from the tone of their voice. She can feed the information from Juniper's testimony into her Widget, and use the "Mood Matrix" to analyse her true feelings. The four mood markers on the screen show the emotions Juniper is feeling as she says each statement. The green marker reacts to happiness, the red marker reacts to anger and frustration, the blue marker reacts to sadness and fear, and the yellow marker reacts to confusion and surprise. The Noise Level, currently at 100%, represents the inconsistency between the testimony Juniper is giving, and the true emotions behind each statement. You have to pinpoint the inconsistent emotion to clear up the noise.

Athena has already spotted an unexpected and inconsistent emotion in Juniper's testimony. On the fifth statement, when she says the rubble fell on top of her, the Happy marker is reacting. That doesn't sound right... Press 
, or touch the "Pinpoint" button, and pinpoint the inconsistent emotion - Juniper's happiness. Juniper says that when the rubble started falling on her, Apollo came and saved her. He used his own body to prevent the rubble from hurting her, resulting in the injuries he has now. She's cheered up after talking about Apollo, and her noise level has reduced. There's still some noise left, though, meaning that there's still an inconsistency somewhere. Athena updates the Mood Matrix, and Juniper adds to her testimony.

On the fifth statement, pinpoint Juniper's sadness. Juniper says she felt sad because of her stuffed animal, "Bum Rap Rhiny". Bum Rap Rhiny is the "brother" of the Phony Phanty. She brought Bum Rap Rhiny to the trial with her, but lost him in the explosion. She shows you a poster with Bum Rap Rhiny and Phony Phanty on it. Athena says that the noise in Juniper's heart has cleared up. Now that you know of the existence of Bum Rap Rhiny, this brings a new meaning to a certain piece of evidence. Juniper continues with her testimony.

- Before I could get out of the courtroom, the bomb went off.
- I was so startled I tripped! Then rubble started falling. I thought I was done for...
- But then Apollo came and rescued me!
Present the Phony Phanty Tail on the first statement. This tail doesn't actually belong to the Phony Phanty - it belong's to Juniper's Bum Rap Rhiny! You are asked to explain how the two animals came to be mixed up. Present the Bum Rap Rhiny's tail. The two animals may be different, but their tails are exactly the same. That defeats Payne's claim that the fingerprints on the tail are decisive evidence that Juniper handled the bomb. The Judge decides to bring the trial to an end for the day, and orders Payne to carry out further investigation.
After the trial[edit]
Apollo isn't in the lobby when you leave the courtroom. Juniper says that, while she was here, she met Apollo, and told him about Bum Rap Rhiny, so he brought her to Courtroom No. 4 to look for it. Apollo stayed behind when Juniper was called to the stand to testify. You head over to the courtroom to look for him, but the scene you find there is anything but pleasant - Apollo is lying unconscious on the ground! What happened to him?
