You've taken quite a detour on your investigation into Mega Evolution, but now it's time to continue your journey to challenge the Pokemon League. This is Cyllage City, a populous city by the beach where the second gym is located. Being the first major city you've been to in a while since Lumiose, it's a good idea to snoop around and enjoy the amenities. Cyllage is known for its bicycle races, and while you can't participate, you can obtain a bike for yourself for faster travel.

A champion cyclist[edit]

Talking to the residents of Cyllage City, you will notice a lot of mentions about a bicycle race and Grant, the city's gym leader. The striking tar road running through the town happens to be a bicycle path, and following it leads you on a winding path up the cliff on the eastern side of the city. About partially up the route, you will meet Grant himself. He tells you that the bicycle race is over, but gifts you HM04 Strength to make up for it. Strength lets your Pokemon move massive boulders like the ones in Connecting Cave, but you have to defeat Grant to use it outside of battle. As an attack, it is likely the strongest Normal-type move you have access to so far, so it's a great move for anything that can learn it.

If you follow Grant once he leaves, you'll arrive at the entrance of the Cyllage City Gym. Interestingly, this gym isn't contained in a regular building like most other gyms in Kalos, but carved out from the rocky cliffside. You could challenge the gym now, but it never hurts to explore the rest of the city first.

Strolling across the beachside city[edit]

Pokémon Center[edit]

At the Pokemon Center, talk to the man standing near the black couches. He will offer to trade Thumper, his Steelix, for a Luvdisc. Steelix is the evolved form of Onix, which normally requires you to trade an Onix holding a Metal Coat, a fairly rare item. Since you are guaranteed to fish up Luvdisc when using an Old Rod around Cyllage City, you can easily make this trade and get a defensive behemoth early in the game.

The Poke Mart stocks some unique Poke Balls in addition to the usual items, each of which having an increased chance of catching certain Pokemon. Net Balls are extremely effective at catching Water-types or Bug-types, which is certainly helpful when fishing for Pokemon. Nest Balls are better at catching low-levelled Pokemon, being stronger than standard variants of Poke Balls when used on Pokemon of level 20 and below. Lastly, the Dusk Ball has greatly increased catch rate when used at night or in the various caves around Kalos. All three are significantly more expensive than both normal and Great Balls, but absolutely more effective in the situations they're designed for.

Free bike[edit]

Beside the Pokemon Center is the bike shop. Upon entering, the owner will congratulate you on being his 10,001st customer! Unfortunately, you're one customer too late to get a bicycle for free, but pick either answer to the question he gives you and he will gladly give one to you. You get to choose from a yellow or green bike. The color doesn't affect the bike's performance, but you cannot change it once you've made your choice, so pick carefully. With a bike, you can traverse most outdoor areas even faster than with roller skates, as well as cycle up slopes to steep to climb by foot.

Massage parlor[edit]

Adjacent to the Pokemon Center is the home of a Pokemon masseuse. The woman inside will offer to massage the lead Pokemon of your party for free, once a day. Massaging Pokemon makes them a bit friendlier to you, which is necessary for specific evolutions, powering up certain moves or obtaining special items from some characters.

Cyllage Boutique[edit]

North of the Pokemon Center is a boutique, and for the first time, you can finally get yourself some new clothes! Unlike in Santalune, you can now buy tops, pants, socks, footwear and bags, in addition to hats and accessories. Most of the clothing in this boutique are energetic and athletic.

Hotel Cyllage[edit]

Near the northern end of the city, you will find the Cyllage branch of Kalosian hotels. At the ground floor, talk to the couple sitting at the table to the left of the counter. The man will give you TM44 Rest, while the woman will give you TM88 Sleep Talk. Rest completely heals its user but puts them to sleep for three turns, while Sleep Talk lets a sleeping Pokemon use one of its other moves at random. These two moves are best used together, so that your Pokemon can stay healthy without wasting several turns.

Upstairs, talking to the maid near the steps will net you a Destiny Knot. This held item has a chance to inflict attraction if the attacker is the opposite gender of the user. It has also gained some new properties that makes it a must-have item for any serious Pokemon breeders, making this a very useful item to keep. For more information about Destiny Knot's function, check the Breeding page. Meanwhile, you can find the usual rotation of tourists in the left room depending on the time of day, shared with all other hotels. You can get a Snooze Ribbon from the woman in the middle room on Saturday. Finally, talk to Mr. Bonding in the right room to obtain the Prize Money Power O-Power, which can increase the cash you get from winning trainer battles while active.

Cyllage Cafe[edit]

The northernmost building in Cyllage City is a cafe. When you go inside, the waiter will give you three locations for your seat. While this cafe may seem like a novelty, its true purpose is for filling your Pokedex. After picking your seat and taking your drink, you can talk to the other patrons in the area to get them to show you their Pokemon. Depending on the price of your seat, it can go from uncommon Pokemon around Kalos to Pokemon outside of the region, even sometimes to legendary Pokemon.

The rest of the city[edit]

Enter the house beside the black belt near the southern entrance to the city. Inside, talk to the cook facing the corner to receive a held item: a Whipped Dream in X and a Sachet in Y. These items are meant to be held by the games' version exclusive Fairy-types, which enables them to evolve when traded. If you have a willing friend, you can trade with each other to evolve your Swirlix or Spritzee! Check the rock behind the house with the cook to find a hidden Ether.

In the house behind the Pokemon Center, talk to the girl sitting by the table. Answer the questions she gives you correctly to receive three Persim Berries, which cure Pokemon of confusion. Talk to the waitress south of the boutique and she will offer to sell you Soda Pop for Pokebuck.png300. This drink heals three times the HP of a Potion for the same price, so it is undoubtedly a great deal. However, you can only buy them individually or by the dozen. Go up the dirt path by the boutique to grab a Super Potion behind the benches.

On the hills, check the bottom rock in front of the gym to find a Protein. Slide down to the ledge on the left to find an X Defense. You can drop halfway down the northern slope of the lane and go south to grab an X Sp. Atk. Use the Dowsing Machine near the biker at the foot of the steep bike lane slope to find a hidden X Speed. On the beach to the west, there are rocks you can break with Rock Smash similar to those on Route 8, which you can use to find rare items or Pokemon. Inspect the rock on the smallest island along the bike lane to find a Pearl.

Once your Pokemon has learned Surf, you can reach a lonely house on an island at the southwest. Talk to the boy inside to get a Charti Berry, which halves the damage taken from a single super effective Rock-type move when held.

Cyllage Gym[edit]

The Cyllage City Gym's specialty is Rock-type Pokemon. Rock-types can either be difficult to break or swept with ease. They can easily sponge Normal and Flying hits, which are fairly common during this part of the game, and their attacks are super effective against Bug and Flying types, again common types on early Pokemon. They are especially difficult for Fire-types, having the advantage in both offense and defense. However, the gym's Pokemon are also quite vulnerable to attacks from your Water and Grass starters, while Fighting, Ground and Steel types, most of which you can catch from Glittering Cave, can both take their attacks and dish back massive damage.

The gym itself is certainly impressive. Located inside a massive cave with a huge waterfall, its main feature is the rock climbing tower at the center, with Grant awaiting challengers at the very top. There are several paths you can take to Grant, and some paths will let you avoid trainer battles. Make note of the suspicious dead end you may encounter on your way to the top. If you return here in the post-game, you may find a Tyranitarite for X players or an Aggronite for those playing the Y version.

It seems that Grant has been doing some fossil digging himself, as his team of Pokemon consists of Kalos's fossil duo. His Amaura's Ice-type attacks can sting if you've mostly relied on Grass and Ground types to sweep through the gym, particularly its incredibly strong Refrigerate Take Down. While it is slow, it has both Rock Tomb and Thunder Wave to bring your speed down as well. Fortunately, Rock and Ice has a ton of weaknesses, and a Fighting or Steel move will quickly take it out. Grant's Tyrunt relies on overpowering you through strength, having Rock Tomb to slow you down and both Stomp and a very powerful Bite to cause flinches. It's Dragon sub-type covers up its Grass and Water weakness, but leaves it more vulnerable to Fairy and Dragon moves.

Once you've beaten Grant, you'll earn the Cliff Badge, which makes all Pokemon up to level 40 obey your every command. He will also give you TM39 Rock Tomb, a moderately strong Rock-type move that slows the target, which can make fast foes a bit more manageable.

While your immediate goal is to head north into Route 10, don't forget to return to Connecting Cave, which can be accessed from Cyllage through a cave entrance at the highest section of the bike lane. Now that you have Strength, you can clear the path between Cyllage and Route 7, creating a very helpful shortcut.
