Rays of light shine through the thick canopy of Santalune Forest, where a vast variety of Pokémon can be found. You will have to navigate through the maze-like forest to reach Route 3 at the northern end of the forest. Curiously, Santalune Forest bears a striking resemblance to the Kanto region's Viridian Forest, down to the species of Pokémon, the location of items and even every trainer's position.

Shauna's accompaniment

The first time you enter Santalune Forest, Shauna will join you so that you can go through the forest together. Until you exit to Route 3, Shauna will follow you around. While she doesn't help you during battles, you can talk to her any time to fully restore your Pokémon. Use this opportunity to train your Pokémon and catch any new Pokémon you want, as you don't need to go back to Aquacorde Town to heal. However, Shauna will no longer follow you once you reach Route 3, so don't go through the northern exit of the forest if you still want to catch or train a Pokémon.

#25 Pikachu
Although it is the mascot of the Pokémon series, Pikachu doesn't have a lot going for it when it comes to battles other than its Speed. However, it is the first Electric-type Pokémon that you can catch in the game, which is super effective on the common Flying-types you will face throughout your journey. If you find a Thunder Stone, you can use it to evolves Pikachu into Raichu, which possess much better stats, though it can't learn some moves that Pikachu can. Some wild Pikachu also hold the Light Ball item, which doubles Attack and Special Attack when held by Pikachu and only Pikachu. If you do manage to get one with a Light Ball, you should definitely keep it as a Pikachu, as the Light Ball lets it hit harder than Raichu! You can also breed Pikachu to get Pichu, and doing so while it is holding a Light Ball will let your bred Pichu learn the exclusive Volt Tackle, an extremely strong Electric attack that also deals a lot of recoil damage back to you.
#511 Pansage, #513 Pansear, #515 Panpour
Santalune Forest is home to the three elemental monkeys: Pansage, Pansear and Panpour. These monkeys have the same types as the three starters, Grass, Fire and Water, so catching one will be quite helpful for covering your starter Pokémon's weakness. They are primarily offensive Pokémon, with good attack stats and Speed but poor defenses. All three monkeys have the exact same stats and similar movesets, with the minor differences being the typing of the attacks they learn. They also learn a variety of moves that involve items be level-up, like Fling, Acrobatics, Recycle, and Natural Gift, so you can try experimenting strategies involving items with them. Pansage, Pansear and Panpour evolve with the use of a Leaf Stone, Fire Stone and Water Stone respectively.
