This walkthrough follows both Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield's story mode, detailing the six major areas of the game. The walkthrough will follow all six versions of Resident Evil, with each area of the game being split into smaller sections to either focus on a certain item or quest or to focus on a specific version of the game. Make sure you know the controls for the game first, because the control system may be confusing for some at first.

If you have the original Resident Evil, just select "New Game" to start right away. If you have the Director's Cut edition, either select "Original" (the original game), "Beginner" (still the original but much easier), or "Arranged" (a completely new story mode). For the Nintendo DS version, either select "Classic" mode (the original game) or "Rebirth" mode (a new single player experience). Once you start the game, you'll be asked to choose either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine.

Character differences

Jill and Chris are two completely different characters, and you may want to decide which is better for you. If this is your first time playing a Resident Evil game, you'll definitely want to start off as Jill, as she has more benefits than Chris. All of their differences are listed below:

Jill

  • Has eight inventory spaces instead of six.
  • Receives a Lockpick that will open almost every major door and any drawer.
  • Barry helps Jill several times throughout the game.
  • Can get the Bazooka but not the Flamethrower (which, however, is almost useless).
  • Takes much more damage than Chris.
  • Starts off with a Beretta M92FS, First Aid Spray, and Combat Knife (and an extra First Aid Spray in Rebirth Mode).
  • Can read notes and play the piano.
  • Kills zombies with fewer gunshots.
  • Can get the shotgun sooner, as even triggering the trap, she will be rescued by Barry.
  • In Rebirth Mode, she'll have sixty Handgun Bullets, twenty-eight Shotgun Shells, a Green, Blue and Red Herb in one of the item boxes.

Chris

  • Has only six inventory spaces instead of eight.
  • Has to unlock drawers with Small Keys instead of the Lockpick (each Small Key takes up one inventory slot).
  • Rebecca will sometimes heal Chris for free.
  • Can get the Flamethrower but not the much more useful Bazooka.
  • Takes much less damage than Jill.
  • Must use the Sword Key to unlock three of the Mansion's rooms.
  • Only starts off with a Combat Knife and First Aid Spray (and an extra First Aid Spray in Rebirth Mode).
  • Can’t read notes and play the piano; he must be helped by Rebecca.
  • Needs more gunshots to kill zombies.
  • Must find the broken shotgun and defuse a trap before taking the shotgun.
  • In Rebirth Mode, he'll have thirty Handgun Bullets and fourteen Shotgun Shells in one of the item boxes.

General tips

  • Always reload by going into your inventory screen, selecting the weapon, and combining it with that weapon's ammo (do not use the auto-reload feature).
  • Try to avoid enemies and fight only when absolutely necessary, as ammo is not available in great abundance
  • In the beginning of the game, try saving ammo by stabbing enemies on the ground with the Combat Knife.
  • Always drop off your Ink Ribbons into the nearest item box after saving to save inventory space.
  • Don't waste ammo on enemies like miniature spiders and bees.
  • Don't waste more powerful ammo on weaker enemies (for example, don't waste Magnum Rounds on zombies).
  • Always reload before entering a room.
  • When you find yourself outnumbered, just simply run into the closest room.
  • If you don't have enough inventory space for an important item, backtrack to the nearest safe room and drop off minor items into the item box.
  • Don't try to take on more enemies than you think you can (for example, taking a on a group of three Hunters is not suggested).
  • In "Rebirth" mode, make use of the quick turn feature to escape from enemies.
  • Once you enter a room, pay attention to any sounds to see what kind of enemy is in the room (for example, a zombie shuffles its feet, a Cerberus will growl, etc.)

Once you select a character, the introduction movie will play, and the game will immediately start once it is over. Enter the survival horror...
