News about the Underworld[edit]

As Mariah suggested, travel to the Dry Lands (near the Shrine of Sacrifice, east of Minoc) and ask Sin'Vraal about the Book of Prophecies and about sacrifice.

Ultima6 portrait h5 SinVraal.png "The Book of Prophecies says that the False Prophet will come to destroy the gargoyle race. Only the sacrifice of the False Prophet will save us."

"Sacrifice means many things in my language. You should seek out a gargoyle scholar to learn more. Travel the other side of the world, and you should be able to find one. You can go down through Hythloth to get to the realm of gargoyles."

There is more about dungeon Hythloth. Many characters, especially from Buccaneer's Den, link it to Captain Johne. The gossip about him are reported here, starting from the most wrong. Indeed, only Leodon and Zoltan have reliable information about this character.

Ultima6 portrait v3 Elad.png The tea-drinker interrupts. "No, no, you've got it all wrong! I can tell you the truth about Captain John!"

"Captain John, that fool... He was captured by gargoyles. I hear they dragged him down into Hythloth, and nobody's seen hide nor hair of him since."

Ultima6 portrait v3 Leonna.png Leonna raises an eyebrow. "Is that so? I could tell a different tale..."

"Captain John is a madman! He went down in Hythloth seeking a way to the other side of the world. Said he was going to kill as many gargoyles as he could before they got him."

Ultima6 portrait v3 Fox.png "That's not true!" says Captain Fox. "I can tell you what really happened."

"Captain John, that lunatic? I hear he went underground seeking the gargoyles, but he fled from the first one he encountered. Nobody knows where he is now."

Ultima6 portrait v3 Leodon.png "Well, that's not what I heard." says Leodon.

"Captain John? That scallawag? He went down to the other side of the world to join up with the gargoyles, the dirty traitor..."

Ultima6 portrait h1 Zoltan.png "Captain John? I talked to him when he gave us the silver tablet for Mariah. He's madder than a gremlin! Claims as he's been living with the gargoyles. He talks as if there's nothing evil about them. He said the tablet had something to do with translating."

One last note about one inhabitant of the underworld, Beh Lem, is referred by the wandering bard Mandrake:

Ultima6 portrait h3 Mandrake.png News? "My travels were interrupted recently in a most fearsome manner. I was captured by the gargoyles, and taken down to the other side of the world, where they held me prisoner. But such was my good fortune that one of them helped me to escape. He spoke but little of our tongue, but I believe he said his name was 'Beh Lem'."

"Hythloth" is a shortened form of "high sloth". According to the Ultima philosophy, Sloth is the opposite of Spirituality. As the virtue of Spirituality comes from the union of the three principles of Truth, Love and Courage, the sin of Sloth comes from the union of the three anti-principles of Falsehood, Hatred and Cowardice.

The dungeon entrance is on the Avatar Isle, just in a corner nort-east from the Shrine of Humility, beyond the river.

Dungeon walkthrough[edit]

  • Floor 1

From the entrance, follow the walls clockwise: this way, you will collect a couple items before reaching the ladder down.

  • Floor 2

Follow the walls counter clockwise to collect sulphurous ash before you get to the next ladder down. In the middle of the lava there is one "oasis" with a ladder down: you can collect some gold there, but remember to cast "Mass Protect" or use purple potions.

  • Floor 3

Here you are forced to walk on lava. And not just once, but twice. Remember to use purple potions or a "Mass Protection" spell. The ladder down is to the south-east.

  • Floor 4

Travel to the south-west. Eventually, you will meet the house of Captain John, a former Companion from Ultima 5. Talk to him: he will give you vital information about the gargoyle city, and also a magic vocabulary. Use the vocabulary, and all the Companions will magically learn the Gargish language in the blink of an eye.

Captain John and Beh Lem[edit]

On the bottom floor of Dungeon Hythloth the Companions meet Captain John. He gives them instructions about the Gargoyle city of Investigations, and also recommends that they wait for the young Beh Lem.

As soon as you exit from Dungeon Hythloth, wait for noon. When Beh Lem arrives, talk to him and let him join your Companions (you will probably have to ask someone to leave; keep Sherry, Blaine and Julia, if they are in your party). Beh Lem starts at level 2; if leveled up, he can become the strongest companion.
