Image sourcing

Sakura Wars reply.

I'm sorry. I couldn't think of a way to add japanese localization names to this game. I thought adding a note is enough but in the end, it just doesn't work at all. Anyway, I got hooked up on Xenoblade Chronicles. I won't be editing for a while now that I'm trying to get everything from the new game. I took gamefaq notes, gamespot maps and a few other because the game itself is complex and big. So sorry for the misinterpretation back there. For now, I'm keeping my mind on getting through Xenoblade and checking the requirements on sidequests.

If you still don't understand, that's ok because mistakes becomes a common thing in my life now. For now, I'll chat to you when I have free time on my hands ok? Thanks.

Pokémon Taxonomy

Hi! Thanks for the appreciation of my Pokémon taxonomy. The idea started when some ignorant American said thing against evolutionary theory, and I thought that there was an obvious translation mistake: pokémons "evolve" the same way a child "evolves" into an adult, and what are called "species" are really "life stages". I actually never had the patience to clear any Pokemon videogame (nor any other breeding videogame: I prefer role-playing VG's), but I like zoology and taxonomy. --Abacos (talk) 09:03, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Clash of Ninja 2

I want to propose something about that CoN2 guide, and since you were the one that changed the level, I figure you know what you're doing. Is the sub-ToC really necessary? Strategies for the characters can be added on those characters' pages (especially considering how their move sets remain largely unchanged throughout the series) and dividing the game into story chapters really isn't necessary. The story mode is essentially Street Fighter with a bunch of text in between fights. The only major difference is the fights aren't randomized, and I'm not sure if that's enough to warrant having strategies down on every single chapter. The only basic strategy I can think of is beat the crap out of your opponent. :P I don't think each battle requires a strategy. A game like Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, where the bosses change phases throughout the battles after a bunch of QTEs, would need strategies for each chapter. Clash of Ninja 2 is just your average fighting game. Tell me what you think. :) --WarioTalk 17:11, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Sorry my response is so late. Between a defective computer and final exams, I couldn't respond as soon as I would have liked. Story mode strategies in one page sounds fine to me. I would think shared strategy pages could work (move lists don't change much across the games in the series - some combos from the Clash of Ninja games are even usable in the Ultimate Ninja Storm games) mostly because of the limited techniques available to the characters at that point in the manga/anime series (which would be built on in later games and added to the page), but if that isn't enough, strategy pages specifically for Clash of Ninja 2 could be done I guess. Now that my summer vacation is here, I'm free to work on the guide, but I want to finish the God of War guide first. That one is long overdue. --WarioTalk 21:50, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

The reason it isn't working is because of the visibility parameter in {{control selector}} and the fact that {{DW3enemy}} tries to force an image. So the NES and GBC controls are putting the monster name into "DW3 monster *.png" as normal, while the SNES control is trying to use [[File:DW3 monster [[File:DW3 monster *.png|left]].png]]. The discussions weren't about the name of the template, but yes about presentation—control selector is a presentation template. It's supposed to be used in prose in guides, not in tables where each system should get its own field or column. — Najzere · Talk 17:14, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

I reverted all of my tests. I'm going to just simplify it into part of the table. Some Monster don't exist in NES so there is no Pic to show it. For example: Instead of Divinegon a red url File:DW3 monster NES -.png will be shown. How should we solve that? I also want to ask you to use something different to mark Bosses, since bolded Text is diffult to spot from the other normal Monster Name. How about using color or so? DW3 trans monster names

Hey NMH. Again, I think it might be best to treat the translation of the monster names with a little more credibility. Consider who translated the game. DQ Translations is not just some run-of-the-mill translation group, they are hardcore DQ fans and enthusiasts. They are not going to come up with any names for monsters that don't in some way reflect the name of a monster that they don't think Enix themselves would have chosen. Considering that there will never be an official release of SNES DQ3, I don't think it's worth giving Paco a hard time about using the translation names. More than likely, anyone playing the SNES version is going to be using the DQ Translations patch, so if we don't use their monster names, it may confuse some of the players (although the pics will lend plenty of clarity). Given the reputation that the translation group has, I certainly feel comfortable using their names. Procyon 00:51, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Well, the in-game chip library assigns one to five stars to every chip: the weakest/most common have one star, the strongest/rarest have five stars. All the attributes of the chips are listed in the Mega Man Battle Network/Battle Chips page. "Stars" is one of such attributes. I'm not sure I understand. For every video game in this website (as well as in every English text), all the titles have nouns, verbs and adjectives capitalized, while prepositions, conjunctions and articles are small. The English Grammar Rules Say Otherwise

I don't see the point. Titles are titles, whether they are titles of sections or titles of video games. Why making a grammar difference? After writing two thesis in English I'm 100% sure that the English grammar rule is the one I stated above here. Spell classification

Well then, I think we can solve it with five categories:

  1. Spells that can only be used outside battle;
  2. Spells that can be used both during battle and during peace (they're almost exclusively healing spells);
  3. Battle spells that target the allies;
  4. Battle spells that target the enemies but deal no damage;
  5. Battle spells that damage the enemies.

Said this, we are just discussing about how to call them:

  1. Peace or non-combat (I prefer the positive idea of Peace: if it's not battle, it is Peace);
  2. Healing or restorative ("healing" is a shorter word);
  3. Support or buff ("buff" sounds funny, I mean it really sounds like the word "funny" in many languages);
  4. Debuff (I think we agree here);
  5. Attack (I think we agree here too).

If you accept the joke, I'm not surprised that "Peace" makes no sense to an American. Just kidding!!!

You know, my classification arised when I was playing Ultima 4 for NES, where you can access almost thirty spells since the beginning of the video game and there's not even a distinction between black and white magic, therefore I needed to sort out all the magic that was in my hands. Years before I read Sun-Tzu, and his classification is Attack, Defense, Sabotage and Logistic. I modeled mine according to his, and because Ultima 4 is a video game about Virtues, I put the "virtuous" Peace (Logistic) first, then Defense/Support, Sabotage/Debuff and last the "un-virtuous and violent" Attack. --Abacos (talk) 21:44, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm still not presuaded about "Non-combat" category, because it does not really say what the spell is for, it just says what it is not for. I mean, it's like "What are you doing?" "I'm not smoking" "Ok, but what are you doing then?"
Since all the "non-combat" spells involve either teleporting or removing obstacles on your way (obstacles like closed doors or darkness in dungeons or magic fields) or seeing where you are (map spell, locate spell), I would rather call them "Travel spells" or something like that. They are all spells that help traveling and moving around indeed. I would not call them "Movement spells" because they don't always imply the movement of anything (e.g. a Map spell or Light spells). --Abacos (talk) 14:07, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
I'm afraid your last reply was a bit hasty. I don't want to introduce further categories, five are enough. I just want to give a positive name to one. "Peace" is too generic, "miscellaneous" is the most generic thing ever (it sounds like "I didn't know how to categorize these"), and I think "non-combat" is too generic too, because it's a negative label, as I outlined above. "Travel" describes well enough what all the spells so far called "non-combat" are about. Exactly, "Antidote" in Dragon Quest 4 can only be used outside battle (and I think it is a wise strategy), therefore, according to the definition, it is a Travel spell. The same for "CurseOff" in Dragon Quest 3; moreover, this way all the Healing spells belong to the Pilgrim, while all the Travel spells belong to the Wizard. In the old classification DQ4's Antidote and DQ3's CurseOff would have been exceptions, buffer spells that cannot be used in battle; now they are included in a specific category: I think this shows that the system works well :-) --Abacos (talk) 16:59, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

DW3 enemy template

Hey NMH, I really appreciate the effort you've been putting into this template, but I gotta say, and please don't take offense, but... it's just kind of a mess. For one thing, the GBC and SNES values will always be the same, there's one single value for both remixes. It seems like you could bridge the current template with the original design, seen in Dragon Warrior II/Enemies, where the two values live side by side. Just a suggestion. I never wanted to see that page get so night-marishly out of control. Trying to incorporate every single graphic style into it also makes it kind of busy. Anyway, do what you think is best. I think a wiser approach would be to split the table. Don't try to cram the name information into it. Set up a name table like
NES SNES GBC
Japanese Romanji Translation
That's one table. Then the other table can be split between NES and SNES/GBC (or Original and Remix). I think you'll save yourself a huge headache splitting the tables instead of trying to cram everything on to one table. Right now the page looks broken. Procyon 22:46, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

FF7 weapon "values"

"Value" and "price" are synonimous; I used them without making any distinction so far. If {{n/a}} is used, when sorting the table by price it is considered as zero, but the weapons that cannot be purchased have an extremely high value due to their rarity and should go after those with a price. If I use alphanumeric characters, all the column is considered text, an then the "1, 10, 11, 2, 20, 200, 3,..." glitch appears when sorting by price. I'm gonna try the ∞ (infinity) symbol or something else before moving out of the sandbox. --Abacos (talk) 16:49, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

I see, but I don't like it too much. I think that the sell-price column is redundant, it just shows half the purchasing price. I'd rather use one single column with purchasing prices and "n/a"s, and add a note at the top of the page saying that selling price is half of purchasing price, and weapons that cannot be purchased are sold for 1 Gil. Sorry, the "n/a" sometimes triggers the "1, 10, 11, 2, 20, 200, 3,..." glitch. I wrote "selling price is half of purchasing price" at the top of the page and written "2" in the price column for rare weapons that are sold for 1 Gil. This is not a hypothetical situation; I raise the question in the context of a game walkthrough I am working on.
