Fruit are more than bonus points, they keep you alive. As you play through the game, your vitality meter slowly wears away. Collecting fruit will replenish bars in your meter.

[edit] Visible Eggs
Eggs appear throughout each stage. In order to obtain the contents they hold, you must crack them open. You can do that two ways. The first is by crashing into them as you run. This will send the egg flying forward, and the contents will pop out. However, if the egg falls into a pit or the water, you won't be able to collect the item. The other way requires that you have a weapon. If you do, you can simply throw your weapon at the egg. The first hit will crack it, and the second hit will break it open where it lies.

Description |
The Stone Ax is Master Higgins' (or Wonder Boy's) primary weapon. Press to throw one. You can throw up to two axes on screen at a time. They start travelling straight, and eventually arc downward. Axes can be used against any enemy, but they are useless against stone and fire. |
The skateboard allows Master Higgins to speed through the stage. He can travel even faster from pressing right. If he holds left, he will slow the skateboard down to a crawl, but he can never stop it. Riding the skateboard will allow Higgins to take one hit without dying, whereupon he will lose the skateboard. |
Collecting milk will refill your vitality meter to its maximum. |
The flower is a rare item that doubles the the point value of all of the fruit that you collect. It does not, however, increase the amount of vality it returns. Note: In Wonder Boy, this item was originally a mushroom which changed every fruit into a new type of food, all of which was worth 500 points. |
If you find the Honeygirl Fairy, she will grant you temporary invulnerability while she follows you. During this time, you can crash through enemies. At first they will only be worth 50 points each, but eventually the point value will begin to rise. Eventually, the fairy will leave, and you will lose the invulnerability. |
This is the one item that you don't want to find. The eggplant is Master Higgins' least favorite food. It will follow him around, depleting his vitality meter until he is left with only a couple of bars. Note: In Wonder Boy, this item appears as a tiny Grim Reaper. |
[edit] Hidden Eggs
Hidden eggs are invisibile, and are thus very hard to find. The only sure fire technique to tell where they are is to throw a weapon ahead of you as you run. If you notice the weapon hit something and disappear prematurely, chances are it's hitting a hidden egg. To reveal a hidden egg, you must jump at the location where you believe an egg is hidden. If you're right, the egg will appear, and you can open it like normal. Hidden Eggs are a unique feature to Adventure Island. As such, Wonder Boy does not contain hidden eggs.

Description |
Fireballs are an upgrade to the standard Stone Ax. They travel farther, and they are capable of destroying stones, both stationary and rolling boulders. This is an extremely useful tool to find. |
The only difference between a red Milk bottle and a white Milk bottle is that red ones are only found in hidden eggs. Other than that, they function identically, and refill your vitality meter. |
Finding a Key is good fortune. If you pick one up, jumping on a nearby platform will carry you through the top of the screen and into a bonus stage where you must jump from spring board to spring board collecting fruit. |
If you find a hidden egg that normally contains fireballs, and you are already in possession of fireballs, it will turn into a Ruby Ring instead. Collecting one earns you 2000 points, and can lead to an extra life. |
If you manage to collect three rings, the fourth one that you reveal will be an extra life doll instead. You must collect the doll to earn the extra. |
There is only one Honey Bee in the whole game, and can only be found at the end of the first stage of the first world. Without the Honey Bee, you will be unable to use the secret continue code to continue your game from the last stage after the game is over. |
[edit] Other Items

Description |
There is one bonus pot located in every single stage. In many cases, they are plainly visible, but in certain stages they are hidden inside rocks or certain enemies. You must kill the enemy, or trip over the rock that the bonus pot is hidden in order to collect it. Possession of the bonus pot doubles the amount of bonus points you receive at the end of the level for any remaining vitality meter. In Wonder Boy, this was originally a doll of Tanya. Collecting all 32 of them in the Sega Master System gives you access to a hidden world of extra stages. |
The control pad only appears if you manage to kill one of the running Coyotes that appear from the left, and take two hits to defeat. If you manage to kill one, a controller will appear that you can collect for 1000 bonus points. |
