Age of Mythology is an RTS by Ensemble Studios based on their Age of Empires series but adding fantasy twists from Greek, Norse and Egyptian mythology. It was originally referred to as Age of Empires III by fans, but Ensemble soon dismissed this, calling it a spinoff. An expansion pack, Age of Mythology: The Titans, was later released.

Story[edit]

Age of Mythology tells the story of Arkantos, an admiral of Atlantis. He is led on a quest to regain the favour of Poseidon, Atlantis' patron god. His travels take him to fight in the Trojan War, meeting the centaur Chiron, and then fighting Gargarensis, a cyclops and devotee of Poseidon.

Gameplay[edit]

Age of Mythology plays similarly to other Age of Empires games, drawing particular note from Age of Empires 2. Unlike Age of Empires 2, however, each of the three playable factions - the Greeks, the Norse, and the Egyptians - play considerably differently from each other. This is in stark contrast to Age of Empires 2, where various civilizations uses similar units but put their own flavour on these units by providing various bonuses. While the Greeks in Age of Mythology play similarly to a faction from Age of Empires 2, the Egyptians favour multiple weaker units, while the Norse favour melee infantry at the expense of ranged attacks.

Each of the three playable factions will choose one of three major gods as their starting patron deity, effectively creating three sub-factions. The Greek starting gods are Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades; the Egyptian starting gods are Ra, Isis, and Set; the Norse starting gods are Odin, Thor, and Loki.

Versions[edit]

Age of Mythology: Extended Edition includes the base game as well as The Titans. It adds Steamworks integration, Twitch support, an enhanced observer mode, native HD widescreen and improved water and lighting.

Age of Mythology: Retold was announced on 25 October 2022.
