- Ryo Sakazaki - The main character of Art of Fighting 1 and 2. He is a master of Kyokugen Karate.
- Robert Garcia - Best friend of Ryo and also a master of Kyokugen Karate. Robert is the main protagonist in Art of Fighting 3.

- Lee Pai Long - A master of Chinese martial arts and noted expert of Chinese medicine.
- Mickey Rogers - A former professional Boxer worker as a henchman for Mr. Big.
- Mr. Big - The seedy and corrupt crime lord of Southtown and right-hand man of Geese Howard.
- Takuma Sakazaki - The most established known Kyokugenryu Karate practitioner. Is forced into working for Geese Howard in AOF1.
- Ryuhaku Todoh - The creator and main teacher of Todoh style karate. One of the main rivals of Takuma Sakazaki.

- Temjin - A good-hearted wrestler from Mongolia.
- Yuri Sakazaki - The daughter of Takuma Sakazaki and also a student of Kyokugen Karate.
