Trevor begins his assault against Dracula's castle alone. Along the way, there are opportunities for him to meet up with other warriors with their own personal reasons for seeking revenge against Dracula. Upon meeting up with them, Trevor can make the choice to team up with them, or go their separate ways. Such meetings may occur more than once. If Trevor agrees to accept the assistance of a second companion, the first will depart. It is also possible to refuse all offers and complete the game with only Trevor and no other companions.

Trevor Belmont[edit]

CV3 player sprite Trevor.png

The main character of the game, he is an ancestor of Simon Belmont (protagonist of the original Castlevania) who lived around 100 years prior. The Belmont clan in Trevor's time is an ancient bloodline that has survived while fighting against abominations, and is feared and shunned by people because of their seemingly inhuman strength and abilities. A true vampire hunter who had disappeared from the world and lives in secret, the vampire hunter Sypha, was sought by the Eastern Orthodox Church earlier, but failed to respond. The young Trevor, who inherited the blood of Belmont, answers the call instead. After being found and requested, he heads to Wallachia to subdue Dracula.

Abilites
  • His whip, the Vampire Killer, is stronger than most other weapons when powered up.
  • He is tougher than Grant and Sypha due to his armor and loses less health per hit.
  • Can use the holy weapons.
Sub-Weapons
  • Stopwatch
  • Axe
  • Dagger
  • Cross
  • Holy Water

Grant Danasty[edit]

CV3 player sprite Grant.png

Grant is very agile and has high physical ability. He was one of the people of Wallachia who tried to rebel against Dracula, but he was transformed into a monster by Dracula's magic and was posted at the top of the clock tower. While the clock tower can be skipped, if Trevor takes the detour then Grant can be the earliest partner (if you accept Sypha's or Alucard's offer to team up after that, Grant will depart from the team). He has the highest movement speed and jumping power among the four, and is the only one who can control his direction in the air while jumping or falling. Grant can cling to walls and ceilings to move forward, avoiding dangers from enemies and traps, and take shortcuts that other characters can't access.

In the original Japanese version, Grant's primary weapon is the dagger which behaves identically to Tervor's dagger sub-weapon, but it can be thrown without consuming hearts (usually thrown forward, but when stuck to a wall or ceiling, thrown back or down). Grant can use the ax or pocket watch sub-weapons, and the ax can automatically be thrown twice without the need for a double sub-weapon item. His defensive power is about the same as Sypha's, but lower than Trevor's.

In the Western version, his normal attack is a short melee attack with a dagger. However, when he sticks to a wall or ceiling, he is limited to using only sub-weapons. Since his attack was changed, the dagger is added as an available sub-weapon for him. However, normal attacks are now effective for continuous fire, and sub weapons can be powered up to a maximum of 3 continuous fires like Trevor, and some attacks have been strengthened.

Abilites
  • He can climb on walls and ceiling.
  • He's the fastest character and he can jumper higher than the others.
  • When walking off of a platform, Grant's falling direction can be adjusted. All others will simply fall straight down like a brick.
  • He's not as well protected as Trevor and will sustain one more point of damage per hit than Trevor.
  • He wields a short dagger with fast attacking speed but short range in English versions. In Japanese version, his main weapon is a throwing Dagger without cost.
Sub-Weapons
  • Stopwatch
  • Axe
  • Dagger (English versions only)

Sypha Belnades[edit]

CV3 player sprite Sypha.png

A vampire hunter who trained as a monk in various Eastern Orthodox monasteries since childhood, she received a request from the Orthodox Church to subdue Dracula, and rescue Wallachia, where she once resided. When she learned that Dracula had attacked the town, she left for Wallachia, but did not return. She was turned into a stone statue and captured by a forest cyclops.

The main weapon is a sacred staff, and although it has a short reach, it can be hit repeatedly at the fastest speed among all characters. As a sub-weapon, she can use various magical spell books, including flames, cold air, and orbs of electricity, along with the stopwatch. Her sub-weapon's magical attacks are powerful, and the lightning orbs which automatically follow moving enemies can kill some bosses instantly. She has low defense and takes more damage than Trevor or Alucard. Furthermore, since she is the only partner who does not have special movement actions, she has difficulty getting through certain sections of the game compared to other characters.

Abilities
  • Can cast unique and powerful magic by means of spell books.
  • Her main weapon, a staff, has short range but fast attack speed.
  • She is less protected than Trevor: she will suffer one more point of damage per hit than him.
Sub-Weapons
  • Stopwatch
  • Flame: a powerful attack with limited range.
  • Ice: any enemy around her is frozen and can be easily shattered. Also works on Blood Skeletons and water flows.
  • Thunder: three spheres homing onto the enemies.

Alucard, aka Adrian Tepes[edit]

CV3 player sprite Alucard.png

Dracula's son, his real name is Adrian Fahrenheits Tepes. The pseudonym "ALUCARD" is simply the reversed spelling of "DRACULA". Originally rebelling against his father's demonic deeds, he was forced by his father to sacrifice his body to an evil god, and like his father, he made a contract with the devil and ceased to have a human body. Unlike his father, who can be said to be the devil himself, he retains his humanity. He did not lose his mind, but despised his father when his body was dehumanized. Unable to endure his father's evil deeds, he seeks to challenges Dracula, overthrow his evil schemes, and return Wallachia to its original state. But he knows he is no match for Dracula on his own, so he hides in the underground passages in search of a strong ally.

Alucard's main weapon is hellfire. Initially, he can only throw one fireball straight ahead. If he collects one power up, he can throw a second fireball upward. Collecting a second power-up enables him to throw a third fireball downward. The only sub-weapon that he can access is the stopwatch. His offensive power is low, and he cannot attack on stairs, so he is the weakest of all characters in terms of offense. You can transform into a bat and fly in the sky (which consume hearts, faster in the International version than the Japanese version), and you can take routes that other characters cannot go (however, there are routes that only Grant can go, so it is not so versatile). If you take damage while transforming into a bat, you will return to normal. But if you have at least 1 life and heart left, you can transform even while you are knocked back from damage, so you can avoid falling to death (similarly, Trevor can switch to Alucard and have Alucard transform when Trevor is pushed off a ledge).

Abilities
  • Hellfire: Alucard shoots up to three fireballs
  • Bat shapeshift: Alucard turns into a flying bat that can access areas otherwise hard to reach. This will drain hearts as long as he is in bat form.
  • His vampire blood gives him natural resistance to damage. He is the equal of Trevor in this regard.
Sub-Weapons
  • Stopwatch
