id Tech 1 is id Software's first 3D engine, used in Doom, Doom II, Quake and other games. It was created by John Carmack, with auxiliary functions written by Mike Abrash, John Romero, Dave Taylor and Paul Radek. Originally developed on NeXT computers, it was ported to MS-DOS for Doom's initial release and was later ported to several game consoles and operating systems.
The source code for the Linux version of Doom was released to the public in 1997 under a license that granted rights to non-commercial use, and was re-released under the GNU General Public License in 1999.[1][2] The dozens of unofficial Doom source ports that have been created since then allow Doom to run on previously unsupported operating systems and sometimes radically expand the engine's functionality with new features.
It is not a true "3D" engine, as it is not possible to look up and down properly, and two sectors cannot be placed above and under each other, but it is a fairly elegant system that allows pseudo-3D rendering. In its time, Doom was revolutionary in its ability to provide a fast texture-mapped environment that passed for 3D.
[edit] Zdoom
Zdoom is a Source port made when Id games released the source code for Doom and Hexen. Zdoom is viewed by fans to be better than the original Doom engine (usually referred to as "Vanilla Doom") because:
- Able to pick a game on startup
- Full joystick support
- Jumping
- Looking up and down
- Mouse free-look option
- Many gameplay options
- High resolutions
- Runs better in Windows than "Vanilla Doom"
To run Zdoom you need one of these files:
You should be able to find some of these in a folder that contains Doom, Doom II, Ultimate Doom, Final Doom, HeXen, or Heretic. If you do not have any of these then you should look for the shareware version of Doom (version 1.9) and put doom1.wad into the zdoom directory.
You need at least one of these files to run zdoom: (doom.wad, doom1.wad, doom2.wad, tnt.wad, plutonia.wad, heretic1.wad, heretic.wad, hexen.wad, hexen2.wad)
