Windows Vista is the name for Microsoft's latest operating system. As part of Microsoft's Games for Windows movement, Vista implements many refinements to existing technologies to help both developers and players. It is also the only version of Windows to support the DirectX 10 API.

While companies generally aim for their software to work on whatever versions of Windows are currently the most common, Microsoft specifically designed two of their Games for Windows titles (Halo 2 and Shadowrun) to only support Windows Vista to encourage upgrading; patches now exist that allow these games to install on Windows XP, but the Achievements and other Live functionality are still only available on Vista.
