The Ancients are a race of beings that have existed even longer than humanity. They have large amounts of power, and do not seem to age. There are currently four known Ancients, but it has been hinted that there are more.
In the game, each ancient represents a fundamental substance, and are balanced against each other, like a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors: one Ancient is at the same time stronger than another Ancient and weaker than another Ancient.
Chattur'gha: Ancient of Power. His color is red, and his power focuses on the Body (i.e. strength and health). His mercilessness allows him to overcome the madness of Xel'lotath, but he cannot vanquish the arcane sorcery of Ulyaoth. Monsters aligned with Chattur'gha both endure and deliver greater damage.
Chattur'gha himself resembles a large, blood-red predatory animal, having similarities to a scorpion or snake.
Ulyaoth: Ancient of Magick. His color is blue, and his power focuses on the Spirit (i.e. magick). His magickal manipulation of space and time can destroy the raw power of Chattuur'gha, yet he is easily prone to defeat at the hands of the maniacal Xel'lotath. Monsters aligned with Ulyaoth generally have extra magickal abilities, and can drain the magick of the playable characters.
Ulyaoth himself resembles a large, blue jellyfish, with magickal orbs that constantly spin around his head.
Xel'lotath: Ancient of Wisdom and Madness. Her color is green, and her power focuses on the Mind (i.e. sanity, or the lack thereof). Monsters aligned with Xel'lotath are somewhat weak, but take away more sanity from the player characters, and sometimes require different strategies to kill. Most also possess the ability to generate phantom limbs when their actual limbs are removed; these phantom limbs cannot be destroyed. Her psychic powers snuff out the magick of Ulyaoth with little effort. However, her unholy psychotherapy is no match for the mighty Chattur'gha.
Xel'lotath herself resembles a warped angel with four arms and a single, large eye set into her torso.
Mantorok: Ancient of Order and Chaos, also known as "the Corpse God". His color is purple, and he is simultaneously weaker and stronger than all of the other three ancients; though monsters aligned with Mantorok are much weaker than their counterparts, his magick can overcome any one of the other three types.
His true form is difficult to describe in words, but Dr. Edwin Lindsey suggests words like "massive" and "amorphous". He seems to possess many eyes and mouths.
