Controls of Final Fantasy Tactics are pretty simple. While you will most likely be using all of the face and shoulder buttons, it will all be very easy to memorize.
[edit] Menu Controls
Navigate through menus. Switches between character skill types and item types in the status screen and the "list" option item screen respectively.
Confirm.
Cancel.
When in long lists, hold square for "quick scrolls", which let you scroll through items in batches.
Help.

Move/scroll the map. It will scroll past your view only when the cursor reaches the edge

Hold square to move the map view without needing to put the cursor on an edge

Zoom in/out of the world map

Move the cursor from one character to another
Bring up more information on highlighted character
Return to world map/battle
Bring up the menu
Toggle between header and character info view on or off

Toggle the character info displayed beneath each character
[edit] Battle Controls
Move the cursor from tile to tile.
If there is a player-controlled character on the highlighted tile, it will allow you to view its status, as well as to choose auto-battle commands. If there is a computer-controlled character on the tile, be it allied or enemy, it will simply let you view its status. If there is no character on the highlighted tile, pressing circle instantly returns you to your active character and opens up his or her action menu.
Cancel the current action.
Open up the battle menu, consisting of the AT list, the Unit list, and the options.
When held down, highlights enemy units in red and allied units in blue.
Show information about the selected tile, as well as the Geomancer Elemental skill that applies to it.
Highlight the character who will be next to move after the previously highlighted one using this method.
Rotate the map counterclockwise and clockwise, respectively.
Zoom in/out of the map.
Toggle the tilt of the view between low and high.
