Tip
Luso starts out with the Soldier Job, however the sword he uses in the first mission does not have an ability with it. Make sure that after you create the Broadsword, you buy it and equip it to him.

Soldier is one of the two primary classes for Humes. Without learning at least one ability from this class, you can't change into the other Physical jobs. But aside from this, the Soldier isn't an effective fighter. The "-break" abilities have merit, but the Soldier has poor stat growths and should never be used as a character's main class. Bangaa effectively share this job with Humes, though the Bangaa version is called a Warrior and has slightly different abilities.

[edit] Usage

In general, stick to basic attacks rather than using abilities. With a move stat of 4, you can get behind an enemy you're next to and get a powerful Back Attack in. Switch once you know three abilities because by that point, you qualify for all four secondary classes (Archer, Thief, Fighter, Paladin). Make sure that all the Humes you plan on using frequently have been a Soldier by level 15 because they're major hindrances after that.

[edit] "-Break" Abilities

The soldier's "-break" abilities are the most useful, but their lack of range makes them impractical. As an Archer or Hunter, if you equip Arts of War as a secondary ability, you will be able to use the "-break" abilities from a distance.

[edit] First Aid

This is arguably the best Soldier ability because it cures many of the Debuffs that show up early in the game. Blind, poison, and immobilize are three common debuffs that it can cure. Once you become a Paladin and learn Nurse, however, this move is obsolete.
