Library of Ancients[edit]

Head west from Karnak though the broken wall, then southwest. There is a section of desert here which you should avoid for now because of a powerful enemy called Quadrharpy that lurks there. After the desert, turn toward the east and keep going until you reach the Library; it looks like the Wind Temple and is surrounded by forest.

Inside the library, all the scholars are panicking because Mid, Cid's grandson, is missing. He was last seen going to the lower floors to get a book, and they fear he has been attacked by monsters there. Before exploring the lower floors, go to the 2nd floor to talk to more scholars and restore your HP and MP at the urn in the southwest corner. Continue to the roof to find a couple of scholars and some books. The one on the right has monsters inside.

The battles here work differently: the monsters appear one at a time but when you defeat one there is a good chance that it will be replaced by another, so a battle may last a long time. The monsters are pages of a book and they are naturally vulnerable to fire.

Treasure in Library of Ancients
Found Container Location
Ether Chest B. 1 Floor, east side of first dark area.
Ninja Suit Chest B. 1 Floor, west balcony of room with balconies.
Phoenix Down Chest B. 1 Floor, southwest corner of second dark area.

Now go back to the first floor, go down the stair on the left and through the door to the basement. In B1F , approach the wall to move it to the right. There is a gap on the books to the left: enter it to make the shelf move back. Go south through two more gaps in the books, then up a ladder to climb on top of the shelves. Go north then east and follow the shelf to the end have the shelf move again, Go down the ladder next to this and check the shelf at the missing tile to open the way forward. Note, if you want to go back, go to the southeast corner to move the bookshelf back so you can reach the entrance again.

The next room is dark except for a circle of light around you; random battle begin occurring from this point onward. Continue south and enter a room with two balconies overlooking a lower area you can't reach at the moment. Go down the stair to the lower balcony. The door here is a dead end because of a shelf the keeps blocking your path. So climb the ladder and check the top. A passage opens to the top of some book shelves; follow these to a small room with a book on the floor. Check it to start at battle.

Ifrit
Boss level: 22, Recommended party level: 17
HP: 3000, Weaknesses: Water, Ice, Nullifies: None, Absorbs: None
Gold: 0, ABP: 5, Drops: Fire Skill
Description/Strategy

Preparation: This battle is very similar to the boss battle in the Fire Ship, so preparation is pretty much the same.

Tactics: Ifrit casts the same Fire2 and Blaze spells used by LiqudFlame, so you will need to keep your characters health pretty well topped off as much as possible. Attack with ice-based abilities like Ice2. A Sorcerer attacking with an Ice2-infused sword with the Two-Handed ability can finish the fight in 2 or 3 rounds.

When you win you receive the summon spell Ifrit.

Go back to the room with the balconies and go through the door next to the ladder. Now the shelf, sensing that you have the power of Ifrit, lets you through. Exit in the southwest corner to grab some treasure, then go back to a gap in the books to the north.

You enter another dark room. Follow the passage west, south and east, grabbing a chest on the way, to get to a small ledge in the room with the balconies. Go though the gap on the right since you entered on the left. Now you're in another room where you have to move shelves around. Go to the northwest corner of the first section to move the shelf, then check the books at the top of the ladder in order to move it back. There is a door to the south but it leads to a dead end in the room with the balconies. Check the books at the top of the ladder to the right of this to get a battle and open up a passage. Enter to find a save point.

Exit to the southeast to finally reach the floor of the room with the balconies. Enter the door on the left to see Mid studying hard. Step forward and books come out of the shelves to attack.

Biblos
Boss level: 24, Recommended party level: 18
HP: 3600, Weaknesses: Holy, Fire, Nullifies: None, Absorbs: None
Gold: 0, ABP: 7, Drops: Hard Body
Description/Strategy

Preparation: Like all book based monsters, Biblos is weak to Fire, so you should have mages with Fire based magic. Ifrit or Fire2 work well, and if you have a Ninja and a Fire Skill, now is the time to throw it. If you can, have a Trainer collect one of the page monsters to release here. Biblos sometimes casts Toad so be prepared with a supply of Maiden's Kisses. As usual, equip some characters with the !White or !Red ability.

Tactics: Biblos casts a number of different spells, enough so that you'll need to fight this battle several times to see them all. It is important to keep your party high on health. This becomes more important near the end of the battle since Biblos starts casting Drain as a counter attack. Do not attack recklessly at this stage unless you can do major damage; otherwise Biblos will get it back from your characters. Biblos can be paralyzed so a Whip or the summon Remora can be used at the beginning of the fight.

Step forward and talk to Mid to start a cutscene. Turns out he wasn't concerned about monsters at all and barely noticed the raging battle going on behind him. He's done studying anyway and leads you back to the main floor via a secret route. The scholars thank you for saving Mid and he shows you the book he was looking for. It instructs how to power the Fire Ship without using the Fire Crystal and he cannot wait to tell Cid about it. You now have to break the news that the last time you saw Cid he was not in a state to help build anything, much less a new ship engine. Mid rushes off, presumably to find Cid.

Karnak (return)[edit]

The scholars in the library confirm that Mid left to find his grandfather, so you need to go back to Karnak. Go to the second floor of the pub to start a cutscene. Cid slowly comes around and resolves to do his part to help save the Earth Crystal. The only way to get to it is with the Fire Ship and Mid tells him about the book he found. Together they head for the ship to start work.

Exit Karnak and go to the Fire Ship. Mid and Cid are working busily and send you below to keep you out of the way. The scene in the pub triggers a flashback for Galuf. When the flashback ends Galuf realizes he is not from the same earth as the rest of you. If the Earth Crystal is shattered as well then the seal will be broken and X-Death will be released.

Later, you find Cid and Mid resting on deck. Talk to one of them to wake them up and they tell you that the ship is finished. Cid and Mid will return to the Library of Ancients, while you now are free to explore the ocean and find the Earth Crystal.
