The men tend to call him "The Demon", and not always behind his back. To maintain order and unity among the ragtag group of warriors, he is very strict and deals out harsh punishment in accordance with The Code. Very few know his true nature or guess at his internal strife.
Toshizo Hijikata is a commander of the Shinsengumi and helped form the force with Shinsengumi leader Isami Kondou. Hijikata is a long-time friend of Kondou and Kondou often refers to Hijikata as "Toshi". Feared and respected by his men, Hijikata makes most of the Shinsengumi's decisions and is looked upon for guidance. The one that brings the protagonist back to headquarters, he is shown as the soldier responsible for her welfare, though he initially shows no concern for the protagonist. However, he jumps to her protection during battles and as a result starts a rivalry with Chikage Kazama.
