Follow these steps to install a mod.
Single Player Mods[edit]
- Locate and open your hl2 game folder in, \Steam\steamapps\[SteamName]\half-life 2\hl2
- Place your mod folders into \Steam\steamapps\SteamUsername\half-life 2\hl2, agree to overwrite any files (this will merge the folders)
- Mod folders are maps, materials, models etc
- Start Half-Life 2.
- Use the to show console.
- Enter
map mapname
, (where mapname is the name of the custom map, egmap assault
).
Single Player Maps[edit]
- Locate and open your Half-Life 2 maps game folder in, \Steam\steamapps\[SteamName]\half-life 2\hl2\maps
- Backup any existing maps that might have the same name (rename the current map folder, eg \maps\Assault.bsp to \maps\Old.Assault.bsp).
- Move the newly downloaded map into the maps folder.
- Start Half-Life 2.
- Use the to show console.
- Enter
map mapname
, (where mapname is the name of the custom map, egmap assault
).
Multi-Player Maps[edit]
- Locate and open your Half-Life 2 deathmatch hl2mp game folder in, \Steam\SteamApps\[SteamName]\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp
- Place your map folders into \Steam\SteamApps\[SteamName]\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\, agree to overwrite any files (this will merge the folders)
- Map folders are maps, materials, models etc
- Start Half-Life 2.
- Go to Multiplayer → Start Server, then choose your map.
- Alternatively start any multiplayer game, press
map mapname
, (where mapname is the name of the custom map, egmap assault
). to show console, enter

SourceMods[edit]
- Locate and open your SourceMods game folder in, \Steam\steamapps\SourceMods
- Backup any existing mods that might have the same name (rename the current mod folder, eg \SourceMods\Assault to \SourceMods\Old.Assault).
- Move the newly downloaded mod folder into the current SourceMods folder.
- Restart Steam, and go to My Games.
- Run the mod.
