Seems like the reason no large buildings were observed on the surface was that they are in fact underwater! Your ship has been equipped with a special casing so it will function in a liquid environment as well as it does in a vacuum environment. Note that the ship is a bit slower underwater, however, and the casing does not allow for missiles or bombs. Sell any of those weapons and invest in other things, at least for the time being.
