Game progression[edit]
KiKi KaiKai is a linear game. You must complete each stage in order. You start at the beginning of each stage, and you must follow each path to the very end. You are allowed to retrace your steps and return to previous portions of the stage at any time. Along the way, you will come across a key. The keys are never hidden, they are always visible in plain site. Collection of the key is required to access the room at the end of the stage. It is in this room, you will face a stage boss. You must defeat this boss to proceed to the next stage.
PC Engine differences[edit]
In the PC Engine version of the game, there are branching paths. It does not matter which path you take, as both will lead you to the same boss, and on to the same next stage. However, the path you choose determines what kinds of enemies you will face, and what hidden items, if any, are to be found.
