[edit] Destiny Islands

Destiny Islands is the first world introduced, showing up in the opening FMV, where Sora is swallowed by the tide while trying to save Riku, and is transported to another world. This serves as a metaphor for the rest of the story. It is speculated that the Awakening sequence takes place in a hidden area of the Islands.

When Sora awakens from his Awakening, he meets with his friends Kairi and Riku. The three are planning on building a raft and setting sail across the sea to find other worlds away from the island. Destiny Islands is a small world, which often leads to the boredom of its inhabitants, especially Riku, who desired to leave the islands and see the other worlds out there. Tidus once said that once you sail a certain distance from the islands, you simply can't go any further, but the other islanders believe he merely turned back and made up the story.

While gathering materials for the journey, Sora climbs into the Secret Place - a tiny cave on the island where the children scratch drawings onto rocks - and met a figure in a strange cloak who told him cryptic messages about the time to come. Sora's confusion lasts long into the night. Resting up in his bedroom, he sees a dangerous storm approaching, and hurries off the island to save the raft.

Upon arriving on the second island, Sora discovers his friends came too, but only finds Riku, who confuses him further by telling him to accept the darkness. The two disappear in the growing darkness, but Sora returns as the Islands slowly crumble into darkness with the Keyblade in hand. He fights with the Darkside boss, but fails to save his home, and is whisked away on his journey to Traverse Town.

As his first journey ends, Sora and Kairi meet up on the shores of the reforming islands. Sora, knowing that his job is not finished, and that he must still save Riku and King Mickey from the Realm of Darkness, leaves Kairi in the safety of her hometown and promises to return to her.

[edit] Traverse Town

After the destruction of Destiny Islands, Sora ends up in Traverse Town. He is awakened by Pluto and ventures out into the town, eventually meeting Leon whom he fights. Regardless of the outcome, Sora passes out and finds himself in a hotel where he meets Yuffie and learns about the Keyblade and the Heartless, while next door, Aerith explains the same things to Donald and Goofy. Heartless attack, forcing Sora and Leon to fight off the attacking Heartless. Leon tells Sora not to worry about the attacking Soldier and Shadow Heartless and find their leader. As Sora enters the Third District, Donald and Goofy are blown off a balcony above, and land on him. The three battle and defeat numerous Soldier Heartless and The Guard Armor Boss. The three become companions and leave to find Riku, Kairi and King Mickey.

They return multiple times, Sora reuniting with Riku and sealing the Keyhole, meeting Merlin and the Fairy Godmother, and also when a saved Kairi gives Sora her lucky charm. When the worlds are restored after the defeat of Ansem, the fate of Traverse Town is unknown, as its residents return to their worlds.

[edit] Wonderland

Wonderland is the first world Sora, Donald and Goofy travel to together. They arrive just in time to witness poor Alice be put on trial for apparently trying to steal the Queen of Hearts's heart. Alice is sentenced to beheading, but Sora intervenes, promising the tyrannical queen he shall bring evidence to prove Alice is innocent. While searching for evidence, Sora is helped by the Cheshire Cat who gives him the Blizzard element.

Upon returning with evidence, the Queen locks Alice in a cage and unleashes her card minions upon Sora, but he defeats them. Sora rushes to save Alice but discovers her cage is empty. Sora and his friends rush off to find Alice but after a confusing search and lighting candles in the upside-down Bizarre Room, they return to the normal Bizarre Room and face off against the Trickmaster Heartless, which they destroy.

They then discover the world's Keyhole in the sleeping Doorknob's mouth and seal it. Later we find out that Alice was kidnapped, because she was a Princess of Heart. If you return after learning the White Trinity Mark, you can get Wonderland's Keyblade, Lady Luck.

[edit] Olympus Coliseum

When Sora first enters the Coliseum, Phil, who is busy preparing for the games, mistakes him for Hercules. When his mistake is revealed, Phil allows Sora to enter the trials. Though Sora passes, Phil won't let him enter the games. Disappointed, Sora exits, only to be met by Hades, who grants him an entry pass for the preliminaries. Sora then has to go through many preliminaries before he can get to the final battle. The final battle of the preliminaries is with Cloud, who is secretly working for Hades. After defeating or losing to Cloud, Cerberus appears. Hercules holds the beast off until Sora returns to defeat it, winning entrance into the real games.

[edit] Deep Jungle

In the Gummi Ship, Donald and Sora are arguing about landing in Deep Jungle or not. Sora says that Kairi and Riku may be there, but Donald says the King isn't there, so they should move on. After fighting, the Gummi ship crashes and Sora, Donald and Goofy are separated. Sora wakes up in a tree house, where he is attacked by Sabor, but saved by Tarzan. He is then brought to a tent by Tarzan, where he meets Jane and Clayton, who found Donald and Goofy. They had found a Gummi block, assuming that the King might be there.

Sora wants to know if Tarzan has seen Kairi and Riku, so they collect some slides for Jane to help communicate with the jungle man. One of the slides is very strange, because Hollow Bastion appears on it; Sora recognizes it for some reason, yet he has never been off his island home. Perhaps something in his heart is reacting to the sight...

Sora is asked by Jane if he wants to meet the gorillas, and he replies yes, hoping they know the location of Riku and Kairi. Together with Donald, Goofy, Clayton, and Tarzan he meets Kerchak and Kala. Kerchak is not pleased with Tarzan potentially revealing the secret nesting grounds of the gorillas, and he sends Tarzan away.

After this, Clayton goes hunting for gorillas. Donald pushes Clayton, saving Terk who was playing in the tree house. Clayton claims he was saving her from danger, but his actions make everyone suspicious. Afterward and on his own, he is grumbling about his hunting trip being ruined by Jane and Tarzan when he is fallen upon by the Heartless. He disappears, leaving his pipe on a rock. Searching for him, Sora's party finds the pipe, only to be attacked by Sabor one last time.

While Sora kills Sabor, Jane and Terk are abducted by Heartless. They save them and together with Tarzan, the three heroes battle Clayton, now transformed by the darkness in his heart, and Stealth Sneak. They win Kerchak's trust by winning this battle and he throws Sora to the waterfall, where he closes the Keyhole. The Jungle King keyblade is obtained by closing the keyhole.

[edit] 100 Acre Wood

The book is first given to Sora by Cid, near the beginning of the game, to give to Merlin, who tells Sora that there is a world within the book and he needs to collect torn pages throughout the worlds until he finds and seals the 100 Acre Wood's Keyhole. When Sora first goes into the book, he meets Winnie the Pooh who is the only one left in the book. Along the way, he finds and makes friends with each of the Wood's inhabitants with whom he plays a Christopher Robin-like role.

[edit] Agrabah

In Agrabah, they met a magic carpet who flew them to the desert. There, they met a man named Aladdin who was out hunting for treasure. Aladdin spoke of a cave full of treasure. This cave was referred to as the Cave of Wonders. Aladdin then introduced Sora and his friends to his monkey Abu, and his other friend named Genie, who lived inside a magical lamp.

As they returned to Agrabah, the group met a man named Jafar, who wanted to take over Agrabah. He stole Aladdin's lamp, which meant that Jafar was Genie's new master and also kidnapped Jasmine, the princess of Agrabah. Jafar then summoned a powerful monster called the Pot Centipede. As the party was fighting the Pot Centipede, Jafar ran off to the Cave of Wonders. Sora and company defeated the Pot Centipede and realized that Jafar had ran off.

So they followed him into the desert where they met the Guardian Lion which was the guardian of the Cave of Wonders. Possessed by the heartless, the Guardian Lion attacked the party. But of course, Sora and company destroyed the darkness within it and it granted them access to the Cave of Wonders. Sora and company followed Jafar deep into the cave where they then encountered the mysterious Maleficent, the woman which the people of Traverse Town spoke of. Sora then learned that Maleficent was gathering seven girls called the Seven Princesses of the Heart. Maleficent then told them that these seven girls had the power to open the "Final Keyhole." Afterwards, she disappeared.

Sora and company then engaged Jafar in a battle. During the battle, Jafar called Genie to help him. But the party overthrew Jafar and won the battle.

After the battle the impact of the battle created a huge hole in the centre of the arena a Jafar fell down the bottomless hole. But Sora wasn't about to give up just yet so he and his friends courageously jumped down too! Jafar wasn't finished just yet. Although he used up all of his strength in the previous battle, the used the Genie's power of the wishes to wish for him to become an all-powerful Genie. Sora and company arrived to the scene and saw the effect. But there was one flaw in Jafar's plan. The party engaged in another battle but instead of targeting Jafar, the party attacked the parrot Iago, who was carrying the lamp. Eventually Iago dropped the lamp and Sora used the lamp to capture Jafar.

When the battle finished, Jasmine had disappeared. Apparently, someone else had taken her. The Keyhole of Agrabah was revealed and Sora locked it. Suddenly, the Cave of Wonders began to collapse with Sora and his friends in it! Quickly, Aladdin's Magic Carpet flew the party out of the cave just before it was about to collapse. Sora and his friends returned to Agrabah where Aladdin used his final wish to set Genie free. Aladdin asked Genie if he could help Sora find Jasmine and Genie agreed to help. Sora acquired the Genie summon. The group was now finished, so they left Agrabah.

[edit] Monstro

While Sora, Donald, and Goofy were flying away from Agrabah to their next destination, they spotted something huge flying towards them on the Gummi Route. They quickly realized it was a massive whale, but were unable to get out of the way before the beast swallowed their ship whole.

Inside Monstro's flooded mouth, the trio met Pinocchio once more and his father Geppetto in a broken ship. It is never explained how Pinocchio managed to get from Traverse Town to Monstro. After speaking briefly with Geppetto, Sora ran after the puppet into the bowels of Monstro, where he quite quickly ran into Riku. The two friends exchange some quick words before Riku runs off with Pinocchio.

Sora chases the two all over the whale, until he eventually finds them in a large circular chamber. Pinocchio is taken captive inside the Parasite Cage Heartless. Sora and Riku team up to take down the Heartless, but are unable to completely destroy it. Riku and the Heartless attempt to take Pinocchio's heart, but fail, and Riku flees as Sora enters the belly of the beast, literally, where he defeats the Parasite Cage once and for all.

From all the commotion in his organs, Montro spews out the Gummi ship and the trio to prevent any more trouble. Pinocchio and Geppetto also escape and set up a shop in Traverse Town.

[edit] Atlantica

Sora, Donald, and Goofy arrive on this strange new world after being given new magical forms by Donald that will allow them to survive and adapt. They quickly meet up with Ariel, Flounder, and Sebastian. After teaching them to swim, the group is attacked by a group of Heartless, which Sora and his gang promptly dispatch. A concerned Ariel invites the group to visit her father's palace to see what to do.

Taking them there, Triton dispatches more Heartless with his magic trident, dismisses Sora's questions about the world's Keyhole, and grounds Ariel. Sulking, Ariel sneaks off to her grotto, where she points out a mysterious mark on the wall. The party travels to the Sunken Ship, where they find a shining Crystal Trident that looks as if it might fit in the mark.

After escaping Glut, they take it back to the Grotto and place it on the wall, but before it can activate, Triton bursts in and destroys it. Ariel storms off, allowing Triton the opportunity to explain that he knows Sora and the rest are Keyblade bearers from another world. After proclaiming the Keyblade only brings destruction, he informs them they have no further business in Atlantica.

Meanwhile, Ariel is approached by Ursula, who promises the mermaid princess that she can help her get to "other worlds", but in order to do so, she needs Triton's trident. Ariel steals it and gives it Ursula, who uses it to injure Triton before retreating to her lair. Sora, Donald, and Goofy go in pursuit. Ursula escapes from her lair, but Ariel gives Sora a new power that will help him and the party get to Ursula and defeat her for good. Ursula receives a swift kick in the tentacles from Sora and his gang; they return the trident to Triton. He and Ariel open up the world's Keyhole, which Sora promptly seals.

[edit] Halloween Town

The gang proceeded to Guillotine Square, where they met the Mayor of Halloween Town. The Mayor introduced the group to the king of nightmares, Jack Skellington. Jack headed to Dr. Finkelstein's, where the party learned that Jack was trying to create an artificial heart, all to control the Heartless, which would then use in his dance. Dr Finkelstein told Sora that the heart need emotion, terror, fear, hope, despair, and pulse, but the heart was unsuccessful, as it needed "memory," something that Sally had. Jack joins the group, to find Sally.

They eventually find her in the Graveyard. She handed them the memory, a "Forget-me-not," and then three kids appeared, called Lock, Shock, and Barrel. After their appearance, they disappeared. So the group returned to the lab where Dr. Finkelstein told them that they still needed the element of surprise to create a heart.

Meanwhile, Lock, Shock, and Barrel told Oogie Boogie about the artificial heart, and how it could control the Heartless. Oogie Boogie then planned to steal the heart. The party found the Mayor who gave them a "Jack-in-the-box," the element of surprise. As the Dr. was about to complete the heart back at the lab, Lock, Shock, and Barrel appeared, and stole the heart.

The group chased after them, and eventually ended up at Oogie's manor. The party battled the three kids and proceeded on to Oogie's Torture Chamber. Oogie Boogie fought the group, but he was easily defeated, but then he became one with his manor. Sora realized that his source of power were the dark orbs located on the manor. So he destroyed all of them defeating Oogie. The manor and Ooggie disappeared. Jack promised that next year's Halloween would be the best ever. Sora and his friends then boarded the Gummi Ship, and left Halloween Town.

[edit] Neverland

During their travels, the group eventually encountered a pirate ship. The pirates attacked the gummi ship. When Sora regained consciousness, he found himself on the deck alone, without his friends. He the finally realized that his rival Riku was on board, and also Kairi. He told Sora that she had lost her heart and that was the reason why he had joined forces with Maleficent. Since Riku now had the power to control the Heartless, he summoned a very special Heartless called Shadow Sora. Then Captain Hook opened a trapdoor, resulting in Sora falling into the cell.

He joined up with Donald and Goofy, but also with Peter Pan, who was on board looking for his friend Wendy. He had a little fairy friend called Tinker Bell. Sora found out that Peter had the ability to fly. Peter then told Tinker Bell to open the door. Meanwhile, Smee Hook's assistant reported to Captain Hook that the prisoners had escaped.

The group explored the whole ship until they found Wendy, who was on the upper floor that was currently unreachable. She told Peter that Kairi was next to her Kairi wasn't moving. Sora and the others had to find a way to get to the upper deck. So they found a trapdoor that led to the Captain's room. But when they entered the room, they encountered the Shadow Sora. Sora and the others managed to fight off the shadow and then the party made their way up to the deck.

When they reached the deck, Peter met Wendy, who was currently unconscious. Sora looked around for Kairi, but she was nowhere to be seen. Then Sora asked where Kairi was, Hook told him that Riku had taken her with him. Hooked then noticed that "The Crocodile," who was the crocodile that bit his hand off, was swimming nearby. This gave him an idea. Hook made Sora walk the plank. Sora stood on the plank and heard Peter telling him that he could fly only if he believed that he could.

So Sora jumped off the plank, but before he hit the water, he flew in the air. Peter then released Tinker Bell, who was locked up in a lantern. Then Captain Hook fought the group. The group won the battle and Hook fell off the plank and was swallowed up by the crocodile. Tinker Bell told Peter that something was happening at the Clock Tower. Sora and the others flew to the clock tower and found the keyhole. Sora then sealed the keyhole and left Neverland.

[edit] Hollow Bastion

Sora, Donald and Goofy arrive at Hollow Bastion in time to find Riku attacking another intruder, the Beast. Sora, Donald, and Goofy confront Riku, but he declares he is the Keyblade's true holder; it jumps into his possession, leaving Sora defenseless except for his old wooden sword. Because Donald and Goofy had instructions to follow the Keyblade bearer, they reluctantly leave Sora for Riku. Sora goes to help the injured Beast, and taking up his old wooden sword, the two team up to enter the castle.

After traversing the castle waterways to unlock the main door, Sora and Beast enter Hollow Bastion. Beast is tricked away from Sora by an illusion of Belle. Riku, Donald, and Goofy appear soon after, where Riku further taunts Sora and shows he has embraced his dark side by attempting to blast Sora with his dark powers. Goofy blocks the blast, and he and Donald decide to rejoin Sora's side. Sora's strength of heart with his friends back by his side pulls the Keyblade away from Riku and back to him. After a fierce battle, Riku is defeated and flees. Beast rejoins the party after watching the encounter, observing that Sora's heart was what helped him win.

Riku is upset at losing the Keyblade, but encounters Xehanort's Heartless, who promises him that he can make Riku's heart stronger through darkness and allow him to regain possession of the Keyblade. Riku succumbs to his's pledge and powers, and becomes consumed by the darkness. In the meantime, Maleficent has attempted to use the gathered Princesses of Heart to open the Bastion's Keyhole. The Heartless-possessed Riku meets with her to check her progress, where Maleficent declares she will control and use the darkness for her own purposes; however, neither she nor Ansem-Riku can unlock the Keyhole without Kairi's missing heart.

Sora and friends manage to travel through the labrynthian castle to reach the chapel; there they meet with and confront Maleficent. Overconfident in her abilities, she is soundly defeated. Escaping back to Riku for help, she is stabbed through the heart by his Dark Keyblade, made from the hearts of the six Princesses. It unlocks the darkest parts of her heart and allows her to transform into a large, powerful dragon; however, Sora's party defeat her again, and she is consumed and burned away by the darkness. Riku disappears after her defeat, and Sora and company travel to the Grand Hall, where the Keyhole and Princesses are located, to find and confront him.

There, Sora finds Kairi unconscious on the floor in front of the partially opened Keyhole. He tries to wake her, but Riku appears to tell Sora her heart is missing. Through Riku's information and attitude, Sora figures out that Kairi is one of the princesses, and that Riku is no longer in control of his own body. Riku then tries to pull Kairi's heart out of Sora, where it took refuge during the attack on Destiny Islands. Sora is weakened, allowing Riku to attack Sora with the Dark Keyblade. Sora blocks the strike in time, and the two fight one-on-one for possession of Kairi's heart, with the result that Sora is again triumphant.

Riku disappears, but the Keyhole begins reacting to the presence of Kairi's heart. Sora attempts to lock the Keyhole, but without Kairi's heart, it is not complete and cannot be sealed. Sora puts two and two together and figures out the only way to free Kairi's heart is to stab himself with the Dark Keyblade. It works; Kairi's and the other Princesses' hearts are freed and the Keyhole opens, but Sora falls into darkness, becoming a Heartless himself.

Kairi wakes just in time to see Sora disappear. Xehanort's Heartless, now in full possession of Riku's body, appears to gloat over the completed Keyhole, but Riku temporarily takes control of his body to warn Kairi and the others the Heartless called by Xehanort's Heartless will soon overrun the castle; she is forced to escape with Donald and Goofy.

The three return to the entrance, and hesitate, wondering if they should go back to close the Keyhole. There, they meet up with a Heartless that Kairi realizes is Sora. Sora's heart, placed in her body by the unlocking, and her own heart restore Sora to his body. Beast stays behind to hold off the Heartless and continue looking for Belle, and so the group departs Hollow Bastion.

Cid manages to find a way to allow them to return and seal the Keyhole. They return and help Beast reunite with the re-awakened Belle, and jump through the Keyhole to fight a Behemoth Heartless. After a conversation with Leon's group, who have returned to restore their homeworld, Sora seals the Keyhole at Hollow Bastion.

In the Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix version, Sora also has his first encounter with Organization XIII in the chapel by way of a hooded figure known only as "Unknown". After some cryptic messages, Unknown leaves, revealing in Kingdom Hearts II that he was testing Sora.

[edit] The End of the World

Sora, Donald, and Goofy travelled through the world, fighting Chernabog along the way, until they reached the very bottom. Sora came upon a door that looked exactly the same as the one from the Awakening scene. Before Sora could open the door, the mysterious voice said, "Careful. This is the last haven you'll find here. Beyond, there is no light to protect you. But don't be afraid. Your heart is the mightiest weapon of all. Remember, you are the one who will open the door to the light." But only Sora could hear this voice.

When Sora opened the door, he was back on Destiny Islands. But there was something wrong, everything started to disappear and change. Sora headed towards the secret place where, he saw Riku standing on the beach. The group approached the image of Riku. The image disappeared and Ansem appeared. He told them that Riku was no longer under his control. Ansem and Sora fought and Sora won. Ansem disappeared and reappeared in a cavern that was created near the waterfall. Sora entered the cavern but Donald and Goofy were blocked out by a barrier. Ansem and Sora fought again, but this time, it was a one-on-one match.

After Ansem was defeated, he summoned an old friend, Darkside. Sora fought Darkside with ease, but after the battle, Sora was pulled into the darkness. When he regained consciousness, he realized that Donald and Goofy were with him. He spotted Ansem in front of him. He told them that Kingdom Hearts was the source of all darkness, but Sora believed that in Kingdom Hearts, there was light. Ansem, furious from Sora's statement, transformed into his ultimate form, the World of Chaos. Sora and his friends fought the final boss and defeated Ansem.

Ansem, who was near-death, opened the door of Kingdom Hearts as a last resort to gain power, but instead of darkness, light appeared. The light engulfed Ansem, and he was truly defeated. Sora, Donald, and Goofy approached the door, and saw that Heartless were coming out. They decided to close the door. Three Darksides appeared and attempted to attack Sora but King Mickey appeared and fought them off. Riku then appeared and helped the gang close the door, while Mickey and him were still in Kingdom Hearts. Riku was not able to leave Kingdom Hearts because he had no heart. The doors to Kingdom Hearts were closed and the two were locked inside. Kairi then appeared and she saw Sora. Then End of the World began to shatter apart, probably because Ansem was not around anymore. Sora and Kairi were again separated.
