LEGO Batman 3 has a wealth of characters from DC's massive roster of superheroes and supervillains. Each character has a unique fighting style and special abilities that help you clear levels. You'll need to utilize every one of these abilities to get all the collectables, and fully unlock every character to get 100% completion.

Abilities[edit]

Ranged attack[edit]

By far the most common ability every character has is a ranged attack, usable by holding down the attack button. Ranged attacks come in two forms: singular projectiles and beams. For singular projectiles, you can target multiple objects while holding down the attack button to strike multiple objects in quick succession. Some thrown weapons can be fit into sockets and be used as poles by acrobatic characters, such as Robin's stick. Others can be used to activate bullseye targets. Beams are fired continuously, letting you move the target of the beam while holding the attack button. Both thrown projectiles and beams are mainly used for hitting distant or airborne items and enemies, but beams have the added bonus of being able to destroy multiple LEGO objects quickly.

Grappling hook[edit]

While crimefighting, you will encounter plenty of orange handles attached to various objects. Characters with grappling hooks can latch on to them and pull on the object, whether to move it or to break it apart. Grapples are also useful tools for getting up ledges.

Tech-savvy[edit]

A lot of technology and devices in your adventures require interaction through control panels. Only characters that are proficient in technology can successfully operate these control panels. Most of the time, using the control panel only requires you to mash a button, but it will occasionally present you with simple minigames that you need to solve.

Transformation and Suits[edit]

Some characters can transform into their civilian identities or into alternate forms. These transformations often grant new abilities while taking away original ones. Some, like Martian Manhunter, greatly expands the character's skillset. A new addition to the game is a suit-swapping system only accessible to a select few characters. These suits grant various abilities with some limitations, and must be unlocked one-by-one. The suits are described below:

  • Power Suit/Demolition Suit: Can launch explosive missiles that destroy silver-colored metal. Can also attach timed explosives to objects.
  • Sensor Suit: Grants super senses, the ability to see through green walls and stealth.
  • Stealth Suit: Only provides stealth.
  • Hazard Suit: Can suck up red, green and yellow objects, which can be used to fill waste processing machines. Also confers toxic immunity and a ranged air blast.
  • Techno Suit: Grants tech-savvy status. Can control miniature robots that can pass through R panels to reach secret areas. Both the character and the robot can hack into access ports.
  • Sonar Suit: Provides a sonic attack.
  • Space Suit: Grants limited flight. Must use fuel stations to lengthen flight time. Also has a heat-based laser beam.
  • Illumination Suit: Provides illumination that can light up dark areas. Must first be charged up from using a lightbulb station.
  • Artic Suit: Grants a freezing attack.
  • Electricity Suit: Lets you drain power from generators which will be stored. The stored charge can later be deposited into outlets to power machines.
  • Scuba Suit: Sink into the water. Comes with a harpoon gun.
  • Dive Suit: Sink into the water. Has a laser that cuts gold objects.
  • Magnet Suit: Can climb up blue surfaces. Can also be used to pull on blue objects to solve puzzles.
  • Sphere Suit: Activate a protective sphere. Can be used on sphere treadmills.
  • Giant Suit: Confers super strength
  • Flower Suit/Helmet Suit: Grants mind control
  • Shield Suit: Grants a shield to protect against fires and reflect beams.
  • Decoy Suit: Drops minions to assist you in battle.

Super strength[edit]

Characters with super strength are used for cracked walls. Their sheer power lets them punch through weakened surfaces to reveal secrets behind them.

Large size/Heavy lifting[edit]

Many characters that have super strength are larger than the rest, but it's possible to have normal-sized characters with super strength as well, such as Superman. However, only large characters can lift up objects with green handles. They can usually throw the object at a specific target afterward, which can also smash cracked walls. Unfortunately, large characters might not fit into some of the tighter spaces, and cannot assemble hopping LEGO bricks.

Flight[edit]

An extremely helpful ability is the power of flight. Flying lets you reach areas you otherwise can't get to on foot, as well as skip over some obstacles in levels during Free Play. Flying also protects you from falling to your death, as it will automatically activate the moment before you fall into an abyss or a lethal surface. Note that the fuel-based flight granted by the Space Suit lacks this ability.

Glide[edit]

A more rudimentary form of aerial movement. Certain characters can prolong their duration airborne by gliding. Unlike flight, they must move toward a direction and can only descend.

Super speed[edit]

Characters with super speed can use pads with a lightning symbol on them. These pads are usually near some flashing objects, which the user can build helpful tools out of. Super speedsters can also make use of treadmill generators to power up various machines in levels.

Super senses[edit]

In the middle of stages, you will often come across sparkling areas marked by swarms of bats. Using super senses while near the swarm of bats lets you uncover hidden items that are often required to progress. One of the most common traits in the game, you can expect any beastly characters or trained hunters to have this ability.

X-ray vision[edit]

X-ray vision lets a character see through green brick walls, often to manipulate pipelines or electronics hidden behind said walls. While it is a sub ability of super senses, not all characters with super senses possess X-ray vision.

Stealth[edit]

When moving through high security areas, you will find cameras that lock down certain areas the moment they spot a player nearby. The only way to sneak past these cameras is with the stealth ability. Unfortunately, enemy characters can still detect you in stealth with few exceptions.

Heat-based laser[edit]

A special category of beam, these attacks are notable for their ability to heat up and cut through golden objects. There are three applications of this ability: destroying golden objects, carving a hole out of golden walls or, in rare occasions, melt down frozen objects.

Freeze ray[edit]

Another type of beam, these attacks can be used in both combat and puzzle-solving. When fighting, it can encase enemies in ice, making them an easy target for you to break. It's also effective on puddles of water that look like LEGO studs, freezing them into intricate ice sculptures that is sometimes needed for collectibles.

Innate electricity[edit]

Characters with this ability can stun enemies by punching and charge up power outlets without draining electricity from generators before hand. It helps you save some time by skipping the search for a generator whenever you need to power up a machine. The Unlimited Electricity extra grants this ability to all characters with Electricity Suits.

Magnetism[edit]

Magnetism lets you manipulate blue metal objects, usually to bust open metal doors or bars.

Mind control[edit]

This sinister ability lets you take control of lesser minds, usually enemy goons or custodian workers. It works through walls, so it's often required to obtain collectibles located in inaccessible areas.

Sonic attack[edit]

Sonic attacks, whether in the form of a ray or a close-range blast, shatters glass and confuses enemies. Their glass-shattering trait is handy for nabbing collectibles.

Reflection[edit]

Characters with the ability to reflect beams usually make use of this ability on panels with a shield symbol on them. They can reflect otherwise deadly laser beams to destroy threats or solve puzzles. Wonder Woman is the most notable character with this ability.

Sphere[edit]

Some characters can form a sphere around them which protects against enemy attacks, while allowing them to turn sphere conveyors. The most notable characters with this ability is Green Lantern and the Sphere Suit users.

Invincibility[edit]

One of the best and rarest abilities in the game, this perk leaves you totally invulnerable to all enemy attacks, but you can still be knocked back by harmful barriers or die by falling into pits. Superman is the poster boy of this ability, but other Kryptonians share it as well.

Regeneration[edit]

Another trait that is purely for survival, this ability lets characters regenerate lost hearts after a short while. It's not very useful due to the abundance of heart drops from defeated enemies, and because dying in this game doesn't result in any major penalties.

Toxic immunity[edit]

Characters with toxic immunity can move through puddles of glowing green goo without getting harmed. This ability is mainly found on Hazard Suit users, but some other characters have this trait as well.

Power Ring[edit]

All Lanterns have special power rings that lets them create constructs. Simply stand on a panel that looks like a lantern symbol to have them automatically create a construct suitable for the situation. Power Rings also have other abilities, such as firing shots at enemies or creating protective shields.

Dig[edit]

You can frequently find conspicuous piles of dirt on the ground. Characters with claws, power rings or any shovel-like tools can dig up these dirt piles to get useful items underneath.

Grate-warping[edit]

Red grates can be found in various places on both walls and floors. Several characters can pass through a grate to travel to another grate. The color palette of the grate suggests that Plastic Man is the main user of this ability, although there are others that can make use of them.

Martian portal user[edit]

A more exotic kind of warp looks like a green vortex with bits of red circling around it. Only characters of the Martian species can make use of these odd portals.

Shrink ray[edit]

Brainiac's ray gun has the exclusive ability to shrink or enlarge black, sparkling objects. He can use this ability to remove obstructions.

Plasticity[edit]

Only Plastic Man has this perk. When standing on a rad pad with stripes, he can transform into a specific vehicle or item to perform a specific task, almost always to get the Red Brick of a stage.

Swamp patch[edit]

Swamp patches look like a large circle of sand with grass growing around them. Only two characters can make use of this: Solomon Grundy and Swamp Thing. When used, they will dive into the swamp patch to dig up an item that would be useful in that specific situation.

Plant patch[edit]

Very rarely you will encounter a bush full of plants of varying colors. Poison Ivy can use these bushes to warp to another similar bush, which is needed to obtain some collectibles.

Minimize[edit]

A very rarely used ability that shrinks your character down to a tiny size to enter small openings. Only The Atom can perform this move. Activating the Mini Characters extra has the same effect.
