MM Overworld Map.png

Namco's Japan-only 1988 platform/shooter arcade game Märchen Maze is divided into nine isometric "worlds": Okashi no Kuni (おかしの国), Omocha no Kuni (おもちゃの国), Tsumiki no Kuni (つみきの国), Kikai no Kuni (きかいの国), Sora no Kuni (そらの国), Bikkuri no Kuni (びっくりの国), Mushi no Kuni (むしの国), Heitai no Kuni (へいたいの国) and Joō no Kuni (女王の国). The image shown above is a full view of the game's overworld map, the relevant part of which is shown after each "world" to give Alice a brief idea of what she'll encounter next as its jingle is heard from the Yamaha YM-2151; it is the player's job to direct her through each "world", blowing bubbles at the inhabitants to knock them off the edges of the platforms, and collecting powerups along the way. The Tokei Usagi, who takes on the role of the White Rabbit, will appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen at 30-second intervals, to speak the Hiragana/Kanji text of Nokori XXX byō (のこりXXX秒) - with XXX being the number of seconds you have remaining. Once you're down to 45 seconds, he will stay on the screen until the time has run out, and the Jikangire Monster comes flying towards you; if this flaming orange version of the Aratizu should touch Alice, she will automatically be forced off the edge of any platform (and even if Alice should have a Balloon in her possession when he does so, its effect will be invalidated). It is, however, possible for Alice to jump over him and walk behind him for the remainder of the round - but if she should get hit by anything that is fired at her by an enemy, she will be forced back into him as a result of it. He will also retreat if you should defeat the boss of a round.
