Green Shell/Triple Green Shell This can be shot forwards or backwards. It ricochets off any walls it hits and flips players upside down. The Triple Green Shell makes three Green Shells orbit your kart. They can be shot at will or used as a shield. Yes
Red Shell/Triple Red Shell This identical to the Green Shell, except that it breaks when it hits a wall and homes in on the next racer. Yes
Bob-Omb This can be thrown forwards or backwards. It walks towards the nearest racers and explodes when either a kart runs into it or after a limited time. Yes
Spiny Shell This runs through the course, homing in on the leader. It knocks over any racers in its path and makes the leader explode. No
Dash Mushroom/Triple Dash Mushroom When used, these give you speed boosts. The Triple Dash Mushroom is the same, although it gives you three. No[2]
Golden Dash Mushroom This gives you unlimited Dash Mushrooms for a limited amount of time. No
Blooper When used, this squirts ink on all opponents' screens, making it harder for them to see what's going on. No[2]

Bullet Bill This lets the computer take control of your kart, as well as making it invincible. This item can act as a curse as well as a compliment, as when it runs out over a jump like the one near the end of Maple Treeway, you're pretty much done for. No
Lightning This shrinks all racers except the user. Small racers can be flattened. No
Fire Flower This lets you shoot ten fireballs forwards or backwards. No
Super Leaf This gives your kart a tail to whip others with. The tail disappears when it is hit by a shell and doesn't whip the shell. Automatic
Lucky 7 This makes 7 different items orbit your kart: a Banana, a Green Shell, a Red Shell, a Bob-Omb, a Star, a Dash Mushroom and a Blooper. Automatic
