In the beginning a mailman will prompt you to enter a name. It can be up to 12 characters long. Choose carefully since after this you won't be able to change it.

You have just received a letter certifying you as a Monster Breeder and are invited to FIMBA headquarters in the first week of April. The game will instantly skip ahead top the date and move you to the location. The employees here will explain what assistants do. Every Monster Breeder has an assistant that is trained to help around the ranch. Your new assistant, Holly, will be there with you to help explain things in-game and do the hands on work. Holly's mentor Tesca will speak with you both about how to make a monster.

Your first monster[edit]

Try using the game disk
If you do not remove the Monster Rancher game disk while generating a monster at the shrine you can get a Rover (Tiger/Hare).

After leaving the IMA building you will be in Town. Your objective is to get your first monster and return to the ranch. If you are curious about the areas press Circle button for an explanation.

Locations monsters can be gained
  1. Shrine: If you have any CDs you would like to use to make your monster then go here.
  2. Market: If you want to start with a purebred Dino, Tiger, or Suezo then come here. Even though the available monsters here never change it is a good resource if your CD collection is small or if you want a guaranteed solid monster.

Go to the Ranch when you have a monster.

The Ranch[edit]

Starting off you have 3,000 Gold. For now that money should be spent feeding your monster, buying items, and paying for training. In the beginning money can become scarce if you are not careful about it. Every week or so there is a random chance you will receive mail informing you of a sale at either the item shop or for training. These happen often enough you should delay using either service until a sale is going on early on.

The first thing you must do is feed your monster. It is best to start off with fish or meat. Begin slowly making your monster work and rest. If you can see the monster's breath it is important to let them rest or they may become sick or run away. Train them until their Loyalty and base stats have increased somewhat. A monster with low loyalty will be off task instead of fight.

Preparing for the Official Cup[edit]

When you think your monster is strong enough send them to a battle. Because battles take a lot out of a monster it is a good idea to let them rest the week beforehand. Once you are confident your monster can handle the standard opponents of their rank enter them in an Official Cup to increase their rank and become able to enter more difficult tournaments. The higher the tournament rank the better the rewards.
