Mr. Goemon title screen.png

Once you have inserted a coin into the cabinet of Konami's Japan-only 1986 platform arcade game, Mr. Goemon, the high-score table on the title screen shown above will change to the text "PUSH START BUTTON 1 PLAYER ONLY" and the set extra life values (by default, "1ST BONUS 20000 PTS AND EVERY 60000 PTS"); once you've pushed the Start Button, a red-and-white-striped wall will disappear off the right side of the monitor as Goemon walks into view onto a platform from its left side. The first stage's theme will then start to be heard from the SN-76496, and you will have to push the joystick to the right to make Goemon fall down to the ground and make his way towards the midpoint, fending off all the enemies that come towards him by striking them with his Kiseru or picking up head-mounted weapons and throwing them - and, if he strikes the location of a hidden object with his Kiseru, he shall reveal it for extra points. Once Goemon reaches the six gold chests at the midpoint, he shall have to jump over them to collect one; the further he jumps over them, the more points he shall receive (he will receive either 800, 1600, 2400, 3200 or 4000 points for doing so), and he will then receive 50 points for every movement of the moon he has remaining (the map of Japan above him also shows his current position in relation to that of the Golden Lamp). Goemon must now make his way towards the endpoint, again fending off all the enemies that come towards him, until he reaches the boss area (which will be indicated by the music changing for the boss, or bosses in the cases of the wig-throwing monks and gold statues of Shiva) - and, because head-mounted weapons are the only way to kill three of the bosses, the lotuses in their areas are regenerative (the green oni and green-faced tengu will also disappear after Goemon survives long enough, but the gold statues of Shiva must be defeated). In the case of the first three stages, Goemon will then, at the endpoint, distribute his collected gold over a village as the lights in its houses turn on and he again receives 50 points for every movement of the moon he has remaining, but in the case of the fourth one, he will have to make his way towards Edo Castle, then jump up to its roof (which the Golden Lamp is sitting on top of), and collect it to end the cycle and receive a 10000-point bonus; the game will then start again with a higher level of difficulty.
