The player needs to have a crew to win a race. The crew has three types of skills: Blocker, Drafter, Scout. Blockers attacks racers for the player. Drafter creates a slipstream for the player. Scout finds a shortcut in the race.

The Scout crew members do a pretty decent job of making the game too easy in a lot of the races, due to the fact that they spend a majority of the race directly in front of the player, thereby allowing you to tie up first with the scout and not having to drive nearly as hard. As long as you're in second (or third in some cases) the scout will most assuredly be in first place. In other words, as long as you're moderately competent the scout will win races for you.
