Playable Characters[edit]

Rolf[edit]

Rolf is an agent of the Commander of Mota, stationed in the capital of Paseo, and the player's avatar in the game. He lost his parents at age 10 in a spaceship crash, which caused the Mother Brain, the computer controlling all of the Algo System, to ban all space travel. Recently, he has been having nightmares every night of a young woman fighting a demon, in which he is nearby, but unable to act. Seven months before the beginning of the game, he encountered Nei, who was at that point a child, on an unspecified mission and took her in.

Rolf is a fairly average character, who, for the first leg of the game, will probably be your main physical attacker. He wields mostly knife- and sword-type weapons and can wear most armor. His technique selection is pretty useful; he learns some offensive, healing, and utility techniques, although he will never be your primary healer and his offensive selection is outmatched by the first dedicated spellcaster you come across.

Nei[edit]

At the beginning of the game, it is revealed that Nei is a combination of human and "Biomonster", which are aberrant beasts produced by the (supposedly) now-defunct Biosystems Lab. Due to this, she suffers discrimination from the general populace, and thus has formed a strong attachment to Rolf, her guardian for the seven months they have known each other. Her unique nature means she grows and matures much faster than a normal human; when Rolf first found her, seven months before the game starts, she was a little girl.

Nei is a lightweight character; quick but weak, and incapable of equipping heavy weapons or armor. She wields claw-type weapons and light armor, and will be your healer for the first leg of the game. She gains levels quickly - almost twice the rate of Rolf - but her base statistics and stat growths are worse, putting her about even with Rolf in Hit Points and Technique Points even when she's nearly twice his level, and her attack and defense will always be worse than your heavy hitters, such as Rolf and Rudo.

Rudo[edit]

Formerly a member of the army (one is left to assume that it is Mota's army), Rudolph Steiner, also known as Rudo, left when his wife and child were slain by Biomonsters. Ever since, he has professionally hunted Biomonsters. When he hears that Rolf has been assigned to investigate the Biosystems lab - the cause of the Biomonster menace - he decides to assist.

Due to his army training, Rudo is very strong; he has little trouble wielding large guns and wearing heavy armor. Aside from his guns, Rudo can equip knife-type weapons. He has the highest Hit Points and Defense of the party at the time you recruit him, making him a good choice for the front lines. He never learns any Techniques, however, meaning that he'll always have a TP score of zero.

Amy[edit]

Amy is a gentle yet determined young doctor who is willing to help others in time of need, especially those impacted by attacks of biomonsters. She is also able to sense the true nature of anyone she comes across. Upon learning of Rolf's investigation of the Biomonster hazard, she goes to assist him on his quest, where she serves as the medic of the team.

Amy acts of a typical skill-type character, being slow and poor in fighting but very capable as a healer, which makes her a good choice as a permanent party member. She can use a fire staff and short guns to attack; she can also wear two emels for very strong defense. She also has a broad range of healing and supportive techniques, which prove to be valuable in tough battles she and her fellow adventurers face. She is the only character who can wear the Neicrown, and one of only two characters who can wear the Neicape, the other being Shir.

Anna[edit]

PS2-AnnaZirski-Head.gif

Anna is the only main character in the original classic series to be known as a guardian. While hunters were originally formed to eradicate biomonsters, some of them would become corrupt and use their powers for evil. Thus, guardians were established to police rogue hunters.

Anna is both a hunter and guardian whose purpose is to bring justice and peace to Motavia, thus is known as a Counter-Hunter. She was and still is forced to hunt down other hunters who turned bad. Anna also believes that giving up is no option. Anna is the sixth member of the party and joins after the player has arrived at Zema.

Anna is very skilled with slicers and whips, and is the only character who can wield the Neislasher, as well as one of the two characters who can wear the Knifeboots, the other being Nei. She is also a balanced fighter, making her a strong asset as a party member.

Hugh[edit]

PS2-HughThompson-Head.gif

Hugh is a pacifist who values life and prefers peace instead of fighting, but he will fight to protect those who are defenseless, including the less-harmful biomonsters. Years of studying has not only given Hugh an excellent intellect which makes him a reliable team member to Rolf when it comes to dealing with biomonsters and the aspects of life. After hearing about Rolf's mission regarding the massive biomonster outbreak, he joins him and serves as the biological expert of the team.

Hugh is not particularly strong as a fighter, but his techniques are very effective against biomonsters, making him a capable technique user. He is the biological counterpart to Kain: both can use certain type of techniques that are effective against certain type of enemies, and both can use the same type of weapons.

Kain[edit]

PS2-JoshKain.gif

Kain has a knack for machinery and inventing, as well as a vast knowledge of technology; however, he often winds up destroying whatever he tries to fix or repair. Kain is very skilled with daggers and some handheld guns. His use of techniques against robots proves of him being a valuable party member in some fights and later parts of the game. Kain is not very strong in fighting biomonsters, but is an all-arounder when fighting robotic enemies.

Kain learns a variety of attack and status infliction techniques, most of which are unique. Almost all of Kains techniques are focused on robot-type enemies making his move-list a robot version of Hugh's. Unlike Hugh, he learns no healing techniques.

Shir[edit]

PS2-ShirGold-Head.gif

Shir was born into a wealthy and well-to-do family in Motavia. She was blessed with the best education and had everything she could have desired, but wanted to seek adventure since she was provided little of it in her life. She eventually finds Rolf, a government agent in Paseo, the capital city of Mota, and decides to assist him in his adventure.

Shir is a very useful member of the player's party, since she has a knack for getting certain items that are otherwise impossible to obtain, including an item which can be used for a saving process at any place. She and Amy are the only characters to sport a Neicape, and is one of the two characters (with Anna being the other) to wear the Shuneboots. Shir is also fast and can use small weapons, like knives and daggers, when in battle.
