The Connecting Cave marks the border between Central Kalos and Coastal Kalos. The path to Cyllage City, where you can get your next gym badge, is currently blocked, so you have to take an alternate route around it. Don't be alarmed by its other name, the Zubat Roost, as Zubats aren't any more common than the rest of the Pokémon you can find here.

To Route 8[edit]

The southern section of Connecting Cave is a straight line to Route 8, which leads to Ambrette Town. There are no items or trainers here, so the most you can do is capture the new Pokémon here. The lone scientist here will heal your Pokémon completely if you talk to her, so you don't have to return to Camphrier Town if your Pokémon are wounded.

Shortcut to Cyllage[edit]

The northern section of Connecting Cave is initially a dead end, as there is a gap preventing anyone coming from the east to cross. It is still worth visiting early on, as there is a trainer you can fight.

  • Pokémon Breeder Mercy
    • Ducklett (Lv. 12)
    • Pikachu (Lv. 12)
    • Litleo (Lv. 12)
    • Oddish (Lv. 12)

There is a cave entrance in Cyllage City that takes you to the west side of upper Connecting Cave. You can create a useful shortcut after beating the Cyllage Gym and obtaining the Strength HM. Upon entering from the Cyllage side, you can push a stone in front of you to fill a gap, letting you cross over to obtain TM40 Aerial Ace. It's a Flying-type move that deals average damage, but has the advantage of never missing.

Go south and east to get to the gap that separated Cyllage City and Route 7. Push the stone there with Strength to bridge the gap. Talk to the backpacker to get TM21 Frustration. This move gains power the less Happiness the user has. It can potentially hit harder than any of your Pokémon's moves at max power, but keeping your Pokémon unhappy constantly is not as easy as it sounds, and the problems from doing so outweigh the benefits the move provides.

#041 Zubat #293 Whismur
Zubat is one of the most infamous Pokemon in the series, known for inducing confusion on passing trainers using Supersonic. Once you catch Zubat, you too can inflict this frustration on other trainers. Zubat and its evolutions has amazing Speed and it has an excellent typing, so it can set up a lot of status moves despite its average defenses. Supersonic should eventually be replaced with the more accurate Confuse Ray, while Zubat also gets Mean Look and Haze later on. It also makes good use of the Taunt and Swagger TMs. Zubat's Attack is also not bad, but you'll need to teach it TMs as the moves it learns naturally aren't very strong. The Whismur line is themed around sound, learning all sorts of sound-based attacks like Uproar, Supersonic, Hyper Voice and the very rare but very powerful Boomburst. It also has the Soundproof to block the very attacks it specializes in. Its evolutions also learn the three elemental fangs, giving it good type coverage. It naturally learns Rest and Sleep Talk, which it can use to attack while staying healthy. Whismur has great attacking stats, but it is rather frail and its Speed is disappointing, so it is more suited to punching holes into defensive Pokemon.
#307 Meditite #610 Axew
Meditite has the exclusive Pure Power, which doubles its Attack stat. Therefore, while Meditite's stats look average and leans more toward defense, it is actually a powerful physical attacker. It is most notable for learning the powerful High Jump Kick relatively early, and it also learns Recover to heal itself much later. It is still held back somewhat back its average defenses and Speed, but its Fighting/Psychic typing patches up most of either type's weaknesses to increase its survivability. Axew is the first Dragon-type in the game you'll encounter. Dragon-types have a ton of helpful resistances, which makes up for Axew's rather poor defenses. Axew is not an easy to Pokemon to train, taking until level 48 to evolve into its final form: Haxorus. However, it is downright brutal if you evolve it fully, with one of the highest Attack stats in the game. It also learns both Dragon Claw and Outrage as powerful STAB attacks, as well as Dragon Dance and Swords Dance boosts its stats. It even gets Guillotine for occasional one-hit KOs.
