The southern route to Lumiose City, also known as Parterre Way, is a sight for sore eyes. It is flanked by perfectly trimmed hedge mazes, with colorful flowers taking the place of mundane tall grass. The main highlight of the route is of course the majestic fountain located at the middle of the route, wonderfully complemented by the surrounding gardens.

The garden path[edit]

You will be greeted by a group of hedge mazes as soon as you enter, as well as gardens of red and yellow flowers. These flowers behave like the tall grass from previous routes, in that wild Pokémon can appear when you're walking through them. The types and likelihood of Pokémon differ depending on the color of the flowers. Be sure to explore the hedge mazes, as each has items located within them, usually in a dead end.

You can find a Great Ball in the top-right hedge maze, as well as a Super Potion in the bottom-right hedge maze. An Antidote is located in the top-left hedge maze, while a Repel is hidden in the bottom-left hedge maze. If you search that hedge maze further you can also find a hidden jar of Honey. These jars of sweet nectar are great for attracting wild Pokémon, particularly Pokémon hordes. As you wander around the hedge mazes, you might stumble across a lone trainer:

  • Gardener Wheaton
    • Corphish (Lv. 10)
    • Pokebuck.png640

Further down the path is a beautiful fountain. It serves no actual purpose other than as a pretty decoration. However, there are two trainers skating in a circle around the fountain.

  • Roller Skater Roland
    • Pidgey (Lv. 10)

  • Roller Skater Calida
    • Fletchling (Lv. 10)

Toward the northern end of the route, the garden's designs change slightly. You can find a Poison Barb in the middle hedges, an item that boosts Poison-type moves when held by a Pokémon. You can also find a Net Ball within the upper right hedge maze, which works better against Water-type and Bug-type Pokémon, while an Ether can be found in the upper left hedge maze. Additionally, there are two Honey hidden here, one to the right of Poké Fan Agnes and one in the top-right hedge maze, as well as a hidden Super Potion in the top-left hedge maze. There are also a lot more trainers here.

  • Poké Fan Agnes
    • Plant Cloak Burmy (Lv. 7)
    • Sandy Cloak Burmy (Lv. 7)
    • Trash Cloak Burmy (Lv. 7)
    • Pokebuck.png560
  • Preschooler Mia
    • Budew (Lv. 9)
    • Pokebuck.png144
  • Preschooler Adrian
    • Magikarp (Lv. 9)
    • Pokebuck.png144
  • Poké Fan Gabe
    • Pichu (Lv. 7)
    • Pikachu (Lv. 9)
    • Pokebuck.png720
  • Gardener Fabian
    • Corphish (Lv. 10)
    • Pokebuck.png640
  • Gardener Grover
    • Corphish (Lv. 10)
    • Pokebuck.png640

At the end of the route you will be greeted by two of Professor Sycamore's assistants, Sina and Dexio. They will tell you about the newly discovered Fairy-type, and offer to lead you to Professor Sycamore's lab. Follow them into the Lumiose City gate.

Lumiose City southern gate[edit]

You will encounter plenty of gates throughout your adventure through Kalos, usually serving as connections between a city and the routes beyond them. They don't serve much of a purpose except helping a game to load the following area, but you can talk to the people within to get helpful information. As you try to go through the northern exit of the gate, Dexio will give you TM27 Return. This move becomes stronger the higher the friendship between you and your Pokémon.

#165 Ledyba #280 Ralts
With so many Bug/Flying types available at this stage of the game, Ledyba really doesn't have anything that makes it stand out. Other than an above average Special Defense, the rest of its stats are pretty terrible, even when it evolves into Ledian at level 18. With poor offenses, lackluster HP and Defense and generic movepool, Ledyba and Ledian is simply outclassed by most of its other Bug/Flying cousins, most of which you can easily catch on earlier routes. Ralts possesses a unique Psychic/Fairy typing, which patches up some of Psychic's common weaknesses. It evolves into Kirlia at level 20, which then evolves into Gardevoir at level 30. However, you can also use a Dawn Stone on male Kirlia to evolve them into the more masculine Gallade, which loses its Fairy typing and gains a Fighting subtype. While Gardevoir is strictly a special attacker, Gallade is much stronger in the physical side. The Gardevoir line doesn't learn Fairy-type attacks until level 85, so you will have to resort to TMs to teach it Fairy-type moves. The Gardevoir line can also have the useful Trace ability, which will let them copy their opponent's ability. While handy in battles, it is especially useful when you want to catch a Pokémon with a specific ability.
#300 Skitty #406 Budew
Skitty is another run-of-the-mill Normal-type, with average stats and a wide movepool. They do have a bunch of status moves like Copycat, Assist, Charm and Heal Bell, but they're pretty disappointing for battles. They evolve into Delcatty when given a Moon Stone. Budew is a Grass/Poison type, giving it several nice resistances. It evolves into Roselia when leveled up with high happiness during the day, but you can easily catch Roselia a bit later. Budew is one of the first Grass special attackers, though its best stat is its Special Defense. You can evolves Roselia into Roserade with a Shiny Stone, but you want to wait until Roselia learns Synthesis and Aromatherapy before doing so if you're serious about training it.
#415 Combee #669 Flabébé
Combee is another Bug/Flying type, but it has more utility than the multitude of the same typed Pokémon before, since it has the ability Honey Gather. This ability gives you free Honey from time to time, letting you sell them or use them to attract hordes. If you want to use them in battles, be sure to capture a female, as only female Combee can evolve into Vespiquen. Although it loses Honey Gather, it does gain three signature moves: Defend Order, Heal Order and Attack Order. Only Heal Order and Attack Order is really notable. Heal Order lets her heal half of her max health, while Attack Order is one of the strongest Bug-type attacks. While Vespiquen's stats are still pretty poor, its signature moves does make it unique from other Bug types. Flabébé is the first pure Fairy-type you can catch in the game, but it also gets plenty of Grass-type moves. It evolves into Floette at level 19, then into Florges with a Shiny Stone. Flabébé and its evolutions have Special Defense as their best stat, with Special Attack being close behind. It is also a good support Pokémon, with great moves like Grassy Terrain, Wish and Aromatherapy.
