Extended Relaxation Center[edit]

Waking up in Hotel Room.

The game opens in a motel-style room. As you groggily get out of bed, an automated voice announces:

"Good morning! You have been in suspension for fifty days. In compliance with state and federal regulations, all testing candidates in the Aperture Science Extended Relaxation Center must be revived periodically for a mandatory physical and mental wellness exercise."

Announcement

The automated voice will guide you through the "wellness exercises":

  1. Look up at the ceiling.
  2. Look down at the floor.
  3. Walk to the painting next to the bed.
  4. Stare at the "art" until the timer runs out.
  5. Reflect briefly on classical music.

After finishing the exercises, go back to the bed and sleep.

You wake up quite a lot of time later in the same room, although it looks much worse.

Wheatley, a personality sphere, will enter the room. Following an announcement asking you to prepare for an emergency evacuation, Wheatley will ask you to hold on to something as he tries to get you out. Wheatley enters the room again and after informing you that you have brain damage, asks you to respond to his questions. All you can do is jump.

Once the alarms start blaring, Wheatley will leave you alone (finally!) and try to "pilot" the relaxation chamber through the crumbling remains of the Aperture Science Lab. You don't have to do anything during this, just enjoy the cinematics and world-building.

Wheatley will "dock" the chamber, asking you to look for the portal gun. Walk out of the chamber after the "docking" process. You will find yourself in a "relaxation vault" similar to the one at the beginning of the first game. Once you finish this part, you will automatically get the Wake Up Call achievement.

Chamber 00 (The Relaxation Vault)[edit]

"Hello and again welcome to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. We are currently experiencing technical difficulties due to circumstances of potentially apocalyptic significance beyond our control. However, thanks to emergency testing protocols...."

Announcement

Once the announcement ends, a portal will appear. Walk through it to get out of the vault (exactly as in the first game). Walk through the exit (circular door signified by a glowing stickman symbol) to proceed to the next chamber.

The First Puzzle[edit]

This is the elevator.

Grab the cube that falls through the funnel and place it on the button. Walk through the exit to proceed to the next chamber.

After walking through two exits and a blue field called the "Aperture Science Material Emancipation Grill", you will find yourself at an elevator. Enter the elevator to move on to the next level. This is how most levels end.

Test Chamber 01[edit]

Once you enter the chamber, you will notice that the cube, the button and the exit are behind glass walls. You will have to use portals to access them.

  1. Press the button to your right. You will notice that the orange portal (right below from where you walked in) now leads behind the glass wall with the cube. Grab the cube and bring it into the main chamber.
  2. Now press the button to your left. The orange portal now leads behind the glass wall with the button. Take the cube through the portal and place it on the button.
  3. Return to the main chamber and press the button next to the glass wall near the exit. The orange portal now leads behind the glass wall to the exit.

Walk through the exit and into the elevator to proceed to the next chamber.

Test Chamber 02[edit]

Once you enter the chamber, and walk through another exit, you will find Wheatley pointing you to a podium which supposedly should have the portal gun. You will find no such thing, however, and the floor will collapse under your feet.

Once you land on your feet, and walk ahead, you will find the portal gun on an elevated platform with some stairs leading to it. You will also notice that you cannot climb up and proceed; you must make use of the orange portal that has appeared.

  1. Grab the portal gun and shoot a blue portal anywhere accessible and walk through.
  2. After walking along for some time, you will find yourself in a chamber with a large pit in the middle. To cross over to the other side, make use of the clearly visible orange portal. Shoot a blue portal anywhere accessible and walk through.
  3. You will find yourself facing another pit before the exit. This time, shoot a blue portal across the pit and walk through the orange portal to reach the other side.

Walk through the exit and then onto the elevator to the next chamber.

The Fourth Puzzle[edit]

Once you enter the chamber, you will notice a button, a cube dispenser and an orange portal. The cubes fall into a pit. Shoot a blue portal into the pit, such that the cubes pass through and appear near the orange portal. Grab the cube and place it on the button.

Walk out of the chamber to the sounds of smooth jazz music.

Test Chamber 04[edit]

You will find two buttons, a cube in a pit to your right, a cube on a raised platform to your right and an orange portal on a raised platform opposite.

  1. Shoot a blue portal anywhere accessible to get onto the raised platform near the orange portal.
  2. Shoot a blue portal at the wall next to the raised platform with the cube.
  3. Grab the cube through the portal, jump down from the platform and place it on the button.
  4. Jump into the pit, shoot a blue portal on the floor, grab the cube and walk through.
  5. Jump down from the platform and place the cube on the other button.

Walk out of the chamber.

You will find the exit raised above you, a glass platform above you and an orange portal on the ceiling. Shoot a blue portal anywhere accessible. Walk through to land on the glass platform.

Walk through the exit and then onto the elevator to the next chamber.

Test Chamber 05[edit]

You will find yourself unable to access the chamber due to debris blocking your path. Note the orange portal that has appeared on the other side. Shoot a blue portal anywhere accessible and walk through.

You will find that the exit is on a raised platform, and that the cube dispenser chutes are separated from you by a pool of toxic goo.

  1. Shoot a blue portal underneath the rightmost chute and press the button next to the orange portal. The cube should now fall through the blue portal and come out of the orange portal, landing right in front of you.
  2. Grab the cube and place it on the button. A set of stairs should now appear; climb onto them to reach the exit.
  3. Shoot a blue portal under the left chute and press both buttons next to the big red button. A cube should fall through the blue portal, come out of the orange portal and hit the now vertical floor, landing safely.
  4. Grab the cube and place it on the big red button on the raised platform. The exit should now open.

Walk through the exit and then onto the elevator to the next chamber.

Test Chamber 06[edit]

You will find yourself in a pit, but there will be an orange portal on an extended piece of wall. Shoot a blue portal anywhere accessible and walk through.

You will find that the exit is on a raised platform. You will also see a pit in the group. Shoot a Blue portal in the pit and jump through. Your speed will be conserved as you fall through, meaning you will come out of the orange portal with the same speed you fell into the blue one. This speed will fling you onto the raised platform. This is an essential mechanic in Portal games.

You will find that the door is locked by means of button, and you will need a cube to open it. There should be one in a box to the left of the door. Shoot a blue portal under it. The cube will pop out of the orange portal, and land on the group. If it falls into the pit, don't worry. Just jump into the pit, shoot a blue portal on the ground, grab the cube and walk through. Now you and the cube will be on the ground.

Throw the cube into the blue portal you created at the pit bottom (or create one now). You will find that the cube flies over onto the platform. Follow the cube; fling yourself onto the platform like earlier.

Place the cube onto the button.

Walk through the exit, into the next chamber.

You will notice that you are separated from the cube, the button and the exit by a large pit. You will also find that the orange portal is in a deep pit at the bottom.

  1. Place a blue portal on the angled platform to the left of the door you came in from.
  2. Jump into the orange portal. You will shoot out of the blue portal with the same speed, thereby flinging yourself over to the cube.
  3. Create a blue portal as high as possible (to the top left) on the wall above the door you came in from.
  4. Grab the cube and jump into the orange portal again (or throw the cube in first). It doesn't matter if you jump in from the pit bottom (not the deep one the portal is in), you will still gain enough speed to fling yourself over to the button.
  5. Place the cube on the button. Do not be fooled by the glass wall; you can just walk around it. This will open up a set of platforms next to the exit.
  6. Again, jump into the orange portal. Same as before, it doesn't matter if you jump in from the pit bottom (not the deep one the portal is in), you will still gain enough speed to fling yourself over to the exit.

Walk through the exit and then onto the elevator for the next chamber.

A Happy Reunion?[edit]

As you walk into the chamber, you will find Wheatley to the left (it's hard to miss him, he's... excited). After his monologue, do as he asks and shoot a blue portal on the wall behind him. Walk through the orange portal, and you will find yourself behind Wheatley now.

Catch Wheatley when he disengages himself from the rail (or don't, just grab him from the floor after he falls). He will open a secret panel on the wall once you put him in a socket on the wall.

Walk along the corridors behind the secret panel. There's just one path.

"Her" Chamber[edit]

As you walk along, you will find yourself walking through GLaDOS's room (this is where Portal's boss fight took place, and Chell defeated GLaDOS). Walk along the ruins, to the other end of the room, where you will find a set of stairs. Continue walking along. Remember that you don't take fall damage, so feel free to take some leaps of faith.

You will reach the "main breaker room". Plug Wheatley into the socket and let him work.

You will ascend into GLaDOS's chamber, and Wheatley, incompetent buffoon that he is, will awaken GLaDOS once more.

Reunite with GlaDOS

Obviously not pleased to see you again, GLaDOS will crush Wheatley and drop you into the incinerator. Once you finish this part, you will automatically get the You Monster achievement.

A Happy Reunion... Again?[edit]

You’ll fall for a great while and eventually land in the incinerator room. Walk across a bridge made of debris. After walking through an opening, you’ll find the dual portal device. Now you can shoot both blue and orange portals.

Place a blue portal at the opening above you and an orange on one of the walls next to you; pass through it to continue. You’re blocked by another wall, so portal your way to the other side. When you walk ahead, GLaDOS will move a wall so that you can portal up to it; do so and continue on. After you drop down and turn left, you’ll find a wall above you that you can portal to, so go up there. You will then be able to portal across the way into a larger room. There’s an exit, through which you should continue. GLaDOS moves some panels and lets you go through a door, down some stairs, and into an elevator.

Walk into the elevator to proceed to the next chamber.
