Quest 64 is set in the land of Celtland. The map in the intro is very similar to Ireland, one of the six Celtic nations. The other Celtic nations are: Scotland, Wales, the British Isle of Man, the English county of Cornwall, and the French province of Brittany.

Please note that the people from the aforementioned Celtic nations pronounce "Celt", "Celtic" etc. as if they were written "Kelt", "Keltic" etc. That's because the letter "C" replaces "K" in the alphabet of the Celtic languages.

Lots of names in the video game are Irish or Scottish.

Given names[edit]

  • Brian, the hero's name, is a very common first name in Ireland.
  • Shannon, the name of a recurring character, is an Irish female name as well as the name of the longest river in Ireland.

Locations names[edit]

Scottish Gaelic is the Celtic language of Scotland, while Gaeilge (often referred to simply as Irish) is the Celtic language of Ireland.

  • Dondoran (Irish spelling: Dún Dobhráin, same pronunciation) means "Mole Castle" in Gaeilge. It seems appropriate, since in that part of the game we are dealing with the Earth element. Anyway, there are no mole animals in Ireland, and "dobhráin" refers to the moles on the skin. Still, there is a real town named Bundoran / Bun Dobhráin in Ireland.
  • The name of Connor Forest is another reference to Celtic nations and particularly to Ireland. Connor and Conor are common given names and part of family names in Ireland: think, for example, of the Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor.
  • The lake is called Loch Kilderey. Loch is the Gaelic for "lake", while Kilderey reminds the Irish counties of Kildare (Cill Dara in Gaeilge, meaning "Church of the Oak") and Derry (Doire in Gaeilge, meaning "Oak-grove").
  • Glencoe (Scottish spelling: Gleann Comhan, same pronunciation) means "Valley of the River Coe" in Gaelic. Moreover, Glencoe is the name of a real location in Scotland.
  • Carmagh reminds very closely the name of Co. Armagh in Ireland, one of the Celtic nations.
  • The Isle of Skye is a real location off the coast of Scotland.
  • Brannoch, the name of a town, is the name of a Christian Saint who was born in Wales and lived near Cornwall.
  • etc.
