Everything you see in Second Life (except trees and bushes) are made out of simple, 3-dimensional shapes called primatives, or prims for short. There are several different prim shapes: box, pyramid, sphere, etc etc. After creating a prim, there are properties that can be altered to change the appearance and shape of the primative. Some of these options are available on all prims, some are only available on a select number of prims, and a few are unique to a single prim.
You can create a complex object of multiple primatives by linking them together. To do this, press and hold the Shift key while selecting the prims you wish to link. After all prims you wish to link are selected, press CTRL+L to link them together. Doing this groups all the prims into a single object, which can be moved together as a single unit. The last prim you select when linking will be your base prim of the object. To unlink the group use CTRL+SHIFT+L.
