Nanase is the younger sister of Hokuto and Kairi. After Kairi's disappearance, Hokuto was determined to set out and look for him, along with her lover Hayate. Nanase couldn't stand to be left behind with the rest of the clan, most of whom were much older than her, and insisted that Hokuto take Nanase with her. Hokuto declined, saying that it would be too dangerous, and she would be safer with the clan. With that, they left.

Nanase had received word of Hokuto joining a tournament, and anxiously awaited the results while she continued to practice the Mizugami style of fighting. When no word came back, Nanase grew tired of waiting around with her clan. She knew that asking for anyone's permission would be futile, so she struck out on her own overnight. She traveled to the location where she believed the first tournament was held, only to discover that a second tournament was going to take place there. She immediately signed up.

Nanase's one and only true goal was to find Hokuto or Kairi and reunite with them. She defeated opponent after opponent, all of whom greatly underestimated her ability with a staff, and did not take her seriously enough. Finally, she was delighted to find out that the name of her next opponent was Kairi. Her joy was quickly dashed when the tournament officials began to worry about the scandal that would be created if this next opponent, who critically wounded several fighters, were to kill this little girl and bring too much unwanted attention to Shadow Geist's organization.

They tried to insist that she back down, that she had no idea what kind of monster she was up against, but she angrily insisted that she be allowed to see Kairi. When it was apparent that they were not going to listen to her, she used her staff to hop over the officials and into the arena. There, she found a man who didn't look quite like the Kairi she remembered. His hair had turned ghost white, and he had a scar across one of his eyes. But looking deeply into the remaining eye, Nanase was sure: it was her brother.

She shouted to him, and demanded that he explain where he had been all this time. He responded simply by attacking her. Nanase sprang into action. Using all of her ability to run circles around him and confuse him, she attacked him from as many different directions a possible in an effort to tire him out. Kairi was fed up with her nonsense and created a burst of power all around him that knocked Nanase off her feet and too the ground.

One look in Kairi's eye gave Nanase the feeling that he still didn't recognize her, and that he may very well kill her. She began to cry. As she watched him approach, she noticed that he paused. She began thinking of all the cherished memories that she had of her older brother and, closing her eyes, began to shout every one of them to him. She shouted and shouted until she felt a gentle hand on her face. When she opened her eyes, she say Kairi's warm smiling face looking down at her. He had woken up, and she was the one who woke him.

They shared a breif happy reunion until they remembered that they needed to find Hokuto. They ran to some officials and asked them for the whereabouts of Hokuto. Kairi and Nanase ran to the location of her last fight. They saw a dead body being taken away. Horrified, they ran to see if it was her. They were more horrified to find out that it was in fact Hayate, Hokuto's lover, and that he died at her hands. Nanase would not believe that Hokuto could have done such a thing.

They began asking witnesses where she went off to, and slowly tracked her down. When they found her, she was in a complete state of panic over what she had done. Kairi and Nanase wrapped there arms around her and they were surrounded by a warm glow. Hokuto's panic disappeared. From that moment, Nanase trained alongside Hokuto and Kairi for the third tournament. When it finally came, Nanase was hoping that her big sister would choose her as a partner. But Hokuto knew that the only way to defeat Shadow Geist and M. Bison was by combining her Chi no Fuuin power with Kairi's altered Satsui no Hadou power.

Feeling rejected, she found another schoolgirl around her own age named Sakura. Like Nanase, Sakura's hopeful partner Ryu had chosen another fighter. Nanase and Sakura decided to become partners and enter the third tournament together. But their fighting style (and egos) clashed so much that they didn't make it past the first round. They each blamed the other and never spoke to one another again.
