The number of lives is so high, they're replaced with sprites.
Unlike the original Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Forever grants a very large number of lives (255 or greater) for the player to use. Instead of worrying about points, coins, extra lives, or running out of time, this game is all about getting from point A to point B using various methods.

The strategies involved will cause you to learn the more "glitchy" physics programmed into the Super Mario Bros. engine as well as force you to act on impulse and memory. It's about speed and accuracy, so practice will both be mandatory and necessary.

[edit] IPS patch

The IPS patch can be downloaded from Zophar's Message Domain. It needs to be applied to a Super Mario Bros. ROM with a checksum of 3337EC46.

[edit] Level 0-1

If you try running the game using an incompatible emulator, you'll end up starting the game here. Sadly, no matter how hard you try you won't be able to continue on to the actual game. At the end of this level is a room similar to the many Koopa castle boss rooms; grab the axe and you'll win the game, however there is no princess, nor will you go to another level. After completion you'll return to the main menu where you can try again.

[edit] Compatible Emulators

  • JNES
  • Nestopia

[edit] Glitches

For more details on glitches, see Super Mario Forever/Glitches.

Glitches are references to small programming nuances that occur due to how the motion of objects were programmed and how the sprites were set up.
