You can use spirits by holding down the button. The duration you hold and number of spirits you have (and your MP, of course) affects what happens after you release the button. Tapping quickly uses the spirit's support effect, and holding it down until the spirit's sprite revolves around you uses the spirit's attack. The support costs 3MP, and the attack costs 6MP for the first spirit and an additional 3MP for each other spirit revolving around you (Thus, attacks can cost up to 27MP). The weapon you are holding effects the trajectory of the magic attack. Sitting (+) recovers your MP at a slow rate. There are 8 spirits of each type (Wisp, Shade, Luna, Salamander, Undine, Dryad, Jinn, and Gnome), all to be found at different locations (click on the respective spirit to see where they are found). Once you have all 8 of a spirit and have leveled up to a class giving an 8-spirit hit, you can use that spirit to do a special attack that hits every enemy onscreen.
