After the animated opening, the game begins, in Sulz. After Mao and Eugene introduce themselves to Veigue, a battle begins immediately.
[edit] Boss Battle: Mao
The first battle of the game! This battle can end in two ways:
- Be defeated by Mao
- Defeat Mao
This battle is basically a introduction to the game engine. As Veigue, keep him away from you by thrust attacking. (Forward+Attack button) However, don't be afraid to try different combinations. Eventually, you'll either defeat or be defeated by Mao, and the battle will end.
(In Hard mode or higher, Mao will begin by casting Blazing Hearts, which can instantly kill you if you're not careful. However, after this, he's exactly the same as he is in easier modes.)
After the battle, Mao and Veigue rescue Claire from the ice. Claire then leaves to her house. After Claire leaves, Veigue enters another battle. However, this time, Mao and Eugene help out.
Afterwards, try walking around Sulz, and speaking with various townspeople. Also, try the skit button. (Select) The first skit should give you a Battle Book. This book keeps track of many things throughout the game. When you're done, enter Claire and Veigue's house.
In Claire and Veigue's house, Mao and Eugene explain why they have come, and why they need Veigue. When the conversation gets interrupted, head to the chapel area. (The area where you began the game.) Two main villains, Saleh and Tohma will be there. After some talking, a battle begins.

You CANNOT win this battle. Regardless, try attacking Tohma a couple times. During the battle, Veigue should learn Zehhoujin, and tokugis (techniques) should now be available for use in the field and battle menu. Some time during the battle, Tohma should instantly end the battle with a technique.
After some more talking, Eugene knocks out Veigue, and Saleh and Tohma leave with Claire. After Veigue comes to, Eugene and Mao explain their actions, and Veigue decides to go with them to rescue Claire. Make sure to visit the various shops in Sulz before leaving for items.
In the overworld, proceed to the Great Larulen Bridge. There, you should meet the trio of Ginnar, Yushia, and Dorunb. After some talking, Veigue takes the three on by himself.

Even though there are three of them, Veigue should be able to take them on easily. If your HP happens to drop low, remember to cool charge (Down + Square) and attack with a tokugi to regain some health.
Afterwards, proceed along the path to get to a building to rest. After a few scenes, you'll be asked to find a noise in the inn room. Examine the clock to proceed. Go outside, and after a few scenes, you'll be back on the overworld again. Keep moving along the path to another bridge. After another scene, Ginnar's group will destroy the bridge. Beat Ginnar's troupe again, you will be back on the overworld again. Proceed to the Alvan Mountains, located to the northwest of the bridge, across a small river.
