The shout is the use of words to produce a magical effect. Concerning the player, it is granted on killing your first dragon and learning the first word of power. A word of a shout is found on a word wall found in specific locations.

Each location provides a word for a specific shout, determined by which order you visit those locations. From time to time, you may receive a Letter from a Friend commenting on your use of a shout at a named location, which also directs you to where you can find another word of power. The graybeards can also give locations of words of power.

To use a shout, you need to first learn a word of power, then unlock the shout with a dragon soul, the first of which is obtained by the end of Dragon Rising. A dragon soul is obtained by killing dragons (although repeat kills on known dragon locations do not grant a soul.) Only in special cases can you use the shout without expending a dragon soul.
