The King of Fighters 2002: Challenge to the Ultimate Battle is another game of the KOF series released by Eolith and published by SNK Playmore and Ignition Entertainment, like Street Fighter Alpha, it is the true successor to one of the games of the franchise, and for KOF 2002, is the true successor to KOF '98, and like this game, is another Dream Match without new characters, but marks the return of the characters from the Orochi Saga, and these characters are Mature, Vice, Ryuji Yamazaki, Billy Kane, Yashiro Nanakase, Shermie and Chris, some characters from KOF 2001 made your second appearence on this game, speaking of KOF 2002, this game introduces again the gauge activation system (performed by pressing Arcade-Button-BKick.png+Arcade-Button-CPunch.png) and introduces the MAX2 DMs (Hidden Super Desperation Moves) that can be performed with at least 20% of health, 1 activated gauge and at least 1 remaining gauge.

The game was later ported to the Dreamcast, and in addition to the 3D stages and better effects, it includes 2 characters: King and Shingo Yabuki, these new characters were later used in other versions of the game, the game was also ported to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox (not compatible with the Xbox 360), and again, includes more characters, Orochi Iori, Goenitz and Geese Howard, this 3 characters were gotten from SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom, but better remakes were released with 4 of this characters.
