Parser Functions[edit]

We (i.e. DrBob) have installed the parser functions found here, and have began to phase out the current functions that these parser functions replace (like qif). Unfortunately, this has caused a few problems. While most have been fixed, others haven't, and people are likely to notice it (like this, for example). If you know why this stuff is happening, or how to fix it, it would be very helpful. Thanks! --Ryan SchmidtTalk - Contribs 20:05, 10 March 2007 (CST)

User page[edit]

Thanks for correcting that problem on my user page. I have to note, your talk page has gotten awful long, have you considered archiving? Lunar Knight (Talk to me + Contribs) 12:08, 11 March 2007 (CDT)

Compilations in home version comparisons[edit]

Hi Garrett. Feel free to completely ignore this, but I was generally under the practice of leaving compilation titles out of the home version comparisons pages. I don't have a particular reason, I just figured it would cut down on the clutter, and the compilation versions strive to be as close to the arcade version that the guide is representing as possible. Like I said, feel free to ignore this, it's just as suggestion. Nice job with the Gauntlet Noteworthies though, that's cool. Might wanna mention Dark Chambers for the Atari 800. (It also had a very inferior Atari 2600 version.)

Importing Lists[edit]

I've found some lists on Wikipedia to help add info for StrategyWiki:Guide completion, they should be OK as most pirated games wouldn't be notable enough (I think). WP:Category:Video game lists by platform --RockyRally-X Rock.png (Talk - Contributions) 11:59, 2 April 2007 (CDT)

RE: Neverwinter Nights quest presentation[edit]

Yea I'm not done with the layout it still needs work. Feel free to play with the template if you like. I like the collapsing boxes over the invisi clues since it helps keep the page shorter and you only have to expand the current quest that your working on. --Argash 06:10, 24 April 2007 (CDT)

Completion on redirects[edit]

I think it artificially inflates the number. The only reason redirects have categories is so that it shows up when people are searching for their game by category. Adding it to completion does not aid this. -- Prod (Talk) 12:24, 28 April 2007 (CDT)

Also, please see User:Ryan Schmidt/redirects. It chronicles the list of redirects in the category and says how many may be removed in order to keep the category by itself at 250 (not the main page count, which includes the featured guides in it as well). Thank you. --Skizzerz Scissors.pngSafety Skizzerz Talk · Contribs · Spel Chek™ · VFG · RTFM 16:49, 23 October 2007 (CDT)

Inquiry[edit]

Could you enable $wgAllowSlowParserFunctions? It would allow the main page to have an accurate (and automated) count of guides at completion stage 4 (see staff lounge and my talk page for reason/discussion). --Ryan SchmidtTalk - Contribs 19:08, 28 April 2007 (CDT)

Nested Parser Functions[edit]

For the AGN you reverted because the Ifeq you added couldn't be nested, but could you do it with a plain if? Because it looks like Template:Cite video game allows nested if's. What's the difference between ifeq and if anyways? --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 20:23, 9 May 2007 (CDT)

Using the Japanese tag in infobox?[edit]

Hi Garrett. I just noticed the change you made to the Game Category involving Japanese characters. Can you think of anyway that we could incorporate the Japanese tag in the infobox? I can't at the moment, short of creating a page with the Japanese name that redirects to the original page, and for that kind of effort, it's not worth it. I was just wondering if you could think of something smarter. Procyon (Talk) 19:43, 14 May 2007 (CDT)

That's what I was afraid of. Oh well, thanks for looking into it. I'll think about it some more and see if I can't come up with a solution. Procyon (Talk) 20:02, 14 May 2007 (CDT)

Category:Subpages[edit]

Hey Garrett! It's been a long time since I last edited (damned exams). :-( I was just spending tonight perusing what's been happening in my absence (I'll be back in just over a month), and I quite like the discussion which is happening. One thing I feel needs sorting is the name of Category:Subpages. It should be hyphenated, and this should be changed ASAP, before the category gets too popular (quite why I'm saying this for a category which is invisible and automatically assigned I don't know, but the thought's still there).

I've changed it over to Category:Sub-pages for you, as well as changing {{Header Nav}} and MediaWiki:Sitestatstext. I don't think I missed anything... --Ryan SchmidtTalk - Contribs 18:12, 17 May 2007 (CDT)

Oh, and Template:Final Fantasy VII/Walkthrough Navigation needs footer-nav-ising. Echelon's desire for individual charm in guides is great, but it's a very bad idea to start making the navigation around guides/the site inconsistent. I'd appreciate it if you could raise this on community issues, because I'm pressed for time. Thanks. :-) I'll see you all in a month! --DrBob (Talk) 17:51, 17 May 2007 (CDT)

Whoops. Forgot to mention: if anybody needs to contact me, drop me an e-mail with the "E-mail this user" link on my user page, because I unfortunately don't have the time to check StrategyWiki with any regularity until my exams are over. --DrBob (Talk) 17:52, 17 May 2007 (CDT)

Templates[edit]

Just as a warning, don't put headers (== ==) in templates, it messes up the edit links. Rather than allowing you to edit the section in the page the template is used, the edit link will lead you to the template itself. -- Prod (Talk) 08:21, 18 May 2007 (CDT)

Completions on redirects[edit]

Hi Garrett. I understand what you're doing with the completion status on redirects, and in most cases, I agree. But I noticed you took some of the redirects that I had to specific versions differences (like the ones in Berzerk), and in those cases, I would argue that they are not complete guides. For example, I pointed Amok to Berzerk because Amok is similar to Berzerk, and until someone decides to write a seperate guide for Amok, Berzerk is a player's best reference. So technically, Amok is not as stage 4 status. On the other hand, alt names (like Tank Battalion for Battle City) do deserve the stage 4 status. So... I know it's confusing :/ I just wanted to fill you in. ^_^; Procyon (Talk) 22:33, 19 May 2007 (CDT)

I love Sega Swirl ^_^[edit]

That's all, I just wanted to tell you :) I wish there was a better online link to direct people to. Procyon (Talk) 19:03, 7 June 2007 (CDT)

Pokemon mini games[edit]

Hi Garrett. I noticed that you added the list of Pokemon mini games to the Category. I wasn't sure if we were going to cover them or not. I have all of them (well, most of them as cartridges, even the Japanese ones, and the rest of them as ROMs). Do you have any of them? Maybe we could work together on some of the guides. Let me know :) Procyon (Talk) 09:20, 21 June 2007 (CDT)

Wikipedia: Gauntlet Dark Legacy[edit]

Ahahaha right when I go to copy some information by clicking edit, I'm told that it doesn't exist any longer. I refresh the page to see all the game info gone, and I check the history and see that you went ahead and got rid of it all. But hey, at least I can still access it and hey, thanks for cleaning up the page for me! --Notmyhandle (talk contribs) 20:33, 8 July 2007 (CDT)

{{featured rotate}}[edit]

I've made it random using the help of DPL (gotta love that extension). Anyway, to add pages, just make sub-pages of that template and put <noinclude>{{featured}}</noinclude> somewhere on the page. It'll get randomly chosen by the DPL and have its contents included onto the Main Page. See Template:Featured rotate/LttP for my example. --Skizzerz Scissors.pngSafety Skizzerz Talk · Contribs · Spel Chek™ · VFG · RTFM 21:15, 16 August 2007 (CDT)

You might want to undo my changes to that page and its expansion then (partially at least). IIRC, 3.1 ran on dos, so i'd expect anything 3.1 to work on dos. -- Prod (Talk) 18:23, 2 September 2007 (CDT)
3.1 did indeed run on DOS, but games that rely on Windows to draw their windows can't run without it. At least that's the way I understand it. GarrettTalk 18:35, 2 September 2007 (CDT)

Gothic II Gold Edition[edit]

Why is this game different from most of the other compilation games, by including the Gothic II ToC? -- Prod (Talk) 19:57, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

Is it treated as a compilation in game though (so you pick if you want to play the first or the second) or as one continuous game without an obvious break. Also, that ToC is going to get HUGE with both games included in that (even with the {{subtoc}}). Does it really need that many subpages? -- Prod (Talk) 21:49, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

Zelda: Oracle games[edit]

Hi! I see you've worked a little on those oracle games a while ago. I think it to be a good idea to make an item overview on the top like in the second BS Zelda game. See here for what I mean. However, I had to improvise by using other Zelda games' images. Can you provide some original images, please? --Best thanks, Proto 13:05, 17 October 2007 (CDT)

Compilation complete status[edit]

Hi Garrett. I saw the Arcade Smash Hits page. You know, you could set that to completion status 4, since we don't grade compilations on the basis of their individual games, but more on the factual information about the title itself. Look at all of the Namco Museum games. All that really matters is that the information is correct, box art is present, and any secret codes that are unique to the compilation itself, and not the games it contains, are listed. Can you please verify this diff (and this one for Ax Battler)? They seem, but I'm not sure how to word it in properly (or if they're even accurate. -- Prod (Talk) 22:06, 24 March 2008 (CDT)

Pengo[edit]

Hi Garrett. Yeah, Pengo for the Genesis is a pretty substantial change. If I didn't know any better, I would swear that the Bomberman team had something to do with it, because it picks up a tremendous number of bomberman-like gameplay. There are power-ups, and different kinds of enemies, the ability to create new ice blocks, and a whole lot of other stuff. But like I said in the Pengo article, the original arcade game is contained in the Genesis game, I guess as a bonus game. The screen scrolls up and down, but the graphics are pretty similar to the arcade. Procyon (Talk) 10:07, 30 March 2008 (CDT)

RE: Compilations[edit]

Thanks for the help. I'll use those sites, when checking games I'm not sure of. I also use Wikipedia, some of the video game articles have reliable ports/remakes sections. RobJ1981 04:24, 9 May 2008 (CDT)

Wii VC[edit]

I agree with getting rid of those lists. However, some of the summary information may be useful, such as the prices per console and things like that. -- Prod (Talk) 21:45, 10 May 2008 (CDT)

WiiWare[edit]

I noticed the edit on the LostWinds page and I'm a tad confused. Are we considering WiiWare to be a platform separate of the Wii itself? To my knowledge the software is pretty much the same, just distributed digitally (and limited to 43MB or so). Thanks. Zelda ALttP item Flute.pngShadowtrooperTalk 14:11, 11 May 2008 (CDT)

Subpage template[edit]

Why'd you remove the developer_header_box class, and what're you doing with a parameter‽ --DrBob (talk) 04:59, 14 May 2008 (CDT)

That class is supposed to make such templates invisible to people unless they've got the line I just added to your personal CSS. Parameter sounds like a good idea. --DrBob (talk) 05:07, 14 May 2008 (CDT)
I believe the merge templates remain visible because they can affect people's edits to a page (i.e. "please don't edit while we merge this with another page"), while subpaging doesn't really affect people's edits. I don't really know. Add the class to mergefrom and mergeto if you want, although I'd rather just delete them. They're too bureaucratic for my liking. --DrBob (talk) 05:16, 14 May 2008 (CDT)

stratawiki.com[edit]

Hi Garrett. I left the following message on Echelon's talk page but I haven't gotten a response yet, so I thought I'd forward it to another admin.

About 1 year ago I registered the domain stratawiki.com with the intent to create the exact site that you have: a wiki devoted to gaming strategy and walkthroughs (basically a wikified GameFAQs). At the time I didn't know about strategywiki.org, but saw that there was a need for such a site. I'm happy to see that someone was able to follow through to create one.

Would you and the other admins like to own the stratawiki.com domain? I happened to have just renewed it through April of 2009, and I don't plan on renewing it again. If the Strategy Wiki crew is interested, I'll transfer it to you for free (assuming you cover any transfer/registration fees); otherwise I'll just let it expire next year.

Fist of the North Star[edit]

Which game gets the honour of taking that page? (and Hokuto no Ken for that matter). -- Prod (Talk) 00:37, 6 June 2008 (CDT)

Previous discussions were that you only redirect if no game uses that name. Only use disambig if the original name is taken. In the case of ties, pick the more popular one, otherwise the first one. -- Prod (Talk) 00:55, 6 June 2008 (CDT)
Seems like they over used the name to me (wp:List_of_Fist_of_the_North_Star_video_games). I don't really want to get into it, but neither of those pages should be redirects, just used {{game disambig}}/{{series disambig}} at the top. -- Prod (Talk) 01:04, 7 June 2008 (CDT)

Removing SVG support[edit]

MediaWiki upgrade[edit]

I've replied to you on DrBob's talk page. -- Prod (Talk) 01:35, 16 June 2008 (CDT)

The backups we've been doing are full db backups, not the xml dumps, so those would be of limited value for full release (and it'd take some time to clean out the private information). For the moment, publicly consumable exports will have to wait. -- Prod (Talk) 02:01, 16 June 2008 (CDT)
