Jack Turner

SNK Portrait Jack.png

Jack Turner (ジャック・ターナー) is a member of Mr. Big's syndicate and one of his highest-ranking subordinates.

Story (in the Art of Fighting Series)

AOF Jack.png

In the original Art of Fighting, Jack is a member of Mr. Big's syndicate, and a developer of his own fighting style. As one of Mr. Big's highest-ranking subordinates, he waits at Mac's Bar to devastate anyone who crosses his path. Jack is also the leader of the Southtown based bike gang known as the Neo Black Cats.

In Art of Fighting 2, Jack tries to reestablish his control over the Neo Black Cats by winning the Tournament and defeating Mr. Big. Humorously, in Jack's ending in AOF2, it was revealed that he wanted to make the gang into a dance group.

Jack is also known as The Muscle Devil From Dairyland.

For the SNES Port, his Stage (Mac's Bar) was changed to Mac's Cafe.

Jack has not appeared as a playable character in a game since Art of Fighting 2.

John Crawley

SNK Portrait John.png

John Crawley (ジョン・クローリー) is a Martial Arts Instructor with a brutal and aggressive fighting style. He is known to his friends as "The Madman" and "The killing Machine". No one knows what his enemies call him, nor do they dare to ask.

Story (in the Art of Fighting Series)

AOF John.png

John was once a pilot of unparalleled skill, but then the marine took a air-to-air missile to his eye. Unable to fly, Crawley was driven to drinking and unsociable behavior. Years later, he was drummed out of the service after being implicated on gun running missions supplying the evil, Mr.Big. Insisting he was framed, the dejected, former ruler of skies now comes to Southtown to set history right.

In the first Art of Fighting, Crawley sports a mullet that is both neck-legnth and combed-back. By the time Art of Fighting 2 occurs, he sports a pompadour that is both short-trimmed and slick-back.

John Crawley's AOF1 incarnation is based loosely on the bodybuilding action-star Arnold Schwarzenegger, his appearance in AOF2 later bares more of a resemblance to martial arts super-star Jean Claude van Damme. Both actors have played as macho militants in their films. He also has been compared to the Street Fighter II character Guile because of their similar color schemes, special moves, military motifs, and fighting stage.

In John's AOF2 ending, the US Military attempts to recruit him to rescue the President's canary, named Tweeter. John refuses, telling the General "Hasta la vista!"

King

Click here for more information about King's other fighting game appearances.

SNK Portrait King.png

King is a female bouncer/bar owner from Southtown who acts and dresses very masculine most of the times.

Story (in the Art of Fighting Saga)

AOF King.png

King's story begins in Thailand. When King was a little girl, she was sent to Thailand in order to learn Muay Thai with her younger brother Jan. King has always assumed a motherly role for her brother and she cares for him deeply. Despite being a woman, she was clearly a skillful Muay Thai fighter who could hold her own in a match. However, she could not fight in an official tournament because she was a woman.

The following year a mysterious fighter known only as "King" entered the tournament. All the fighters were surprised by an enigmatic fighter with short blond hair and a shirt. This was, of course, King posing as a man. She advanced to the finals with relative ease. At the finals, King faced off with the current Muay Thai champion (not Joe Higashi). The fight was pretty even, but the man named only "King" was getting the upper hand. In a rage burst, the champion took hold of King's shirt; King kicked him back in retort. By holding on after the kick, the champion tore off her shirt, revealing King's secret to the crowd ... she was a woman. Everybody was dumbfounded. The organizers considered the final invalid, and threw King away. The humiliated King traveled to the United States, where she would begin a new life with her brother Jan. This humiliating experience caused her to develop an intense conflict with her sex. This shirt-tearing experience can be relived in the games. In Art of Fighting (and a small number of related games, namely The King of Fighters '94), if you used a special move to defeat King, her shirt rips open to reveal that King is a woman and not an effeminate man.

King began working for a mysterious criminal named Mr.Big as a bouncer in his restaurant. She was apparently reading the works of Gertrude Stein while working there. Her stage is set in the aforementioned restaurant. This is where she first came into contact with Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia. King fought Ryo in this restaurant disguised as a man. His true business was with Mr. Big, but Ryo needed vital information from King on how to find him. She refused to answer out of loyalty to her employer. Ryo was oblivious to the fact that she was really a woman and battled her with all his might. The match was close, but he eventually won. Realizing that King wasn't really a bad person, he reached his hand out to help King. Her shirt had been ripped in the carnage and Ryo was surprised to learn that King was a woman. King had never been treated with such respect before, and developed great respect (or more likely, a crush) for Ryo Sakazaki. She helped him find his sister Yuri and quit working for Mr. Big shortly after Art of Fighting.

After the first game, she bought a bar of her own in Southtown with Duck King from Fatal Fury where she was barwoman and he was DJ.

Lee Pai Long (Chinese: 李白龍) is a master of Chinese martial arts and noted expert of Chinese medicine.

Story (in the Art of Fighting Series)

At the time of Art of Fighting, Lee Pai Long works as the director of the Southtown prison. Since he is a former adversary and long-time friend of Ryo's father Takuma, he now faces the son in battle to test his skills.

Lee is a "sennin", a Chinese word for someone who obtains immortality via alchemy.

Humorously, in his ending to AOF2, it was discovered that Lee would become famous for finding the cure to haemorrhoids.

Lee Pai Long is also a good friend of the character Wang Koh-San from Art of Fighting 3.

Mr.Big

Click here for more information about Mr. Big's other fighting game appearances.

SNK Portrait MrBig.png

Mr. Big (マチュア) is the (canonwise) 'real' villain of the original Art of Fighting and the man responsible for the kidnapping of Ryo Sakazaki's sister Yuri. Although he works as the right-hand man for Southtowns kingpin of crime Geese Howard, he is constantly looking for ways to improve his position and dethrone him.

Story (in the Art of Fighting Series)

AOF MrBig.png

Mr. Big has been involved with the mob for as long as he can remember. He made it big in Southtown, a city as seedy and corrupt as he is. Rather than pay tribute to Geese Howard, boss of all organized crime in town, Mr. Big joined Geese's organization, and quickly rose to become his right-hand man.

While Geese was out of town on business, he left Big in charge. Big secretly feared Takuma Sakazaki, the master of Kyokugenryu Karate, so he ordered the kidnapping of Takuma's daughter, Yuri, and threatened Takuma into working for him. Unfortunately, the plan backfired when Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia fought their way through Southtown's crime to find both of them, beating Big senseless to rescue Yuri and Takuma.

Big pondered informing Geese of the incident upon his return, but Geese soon grew embroiled in a situation involving the Bogard brothers, and Big wisely kept his mouth shut.

In Art of Fighting 1, Mr. Big could not crouch or jump.

Fight Order

Art of Fighting 2

You cannot pick Mr.Big as your first opponent in Art of Fighting 2 (single player mode). Mr.Big will always be the 12th and final match of a single player game unless you qualify for the 13. fight against Geese Howard. See the secrets section for more information.

Robert Garcia

Click here for more information about Robert's other fighting game appearances.

SNK Portrait Robert.png

Robert Garcia (ロバート・ガルシア) is the first foreign practitioner of Kyokuganryu Karate and the best friend of Ryo Sakazaki. He is the son of a wealthy Italian businessman.

Story (in the Art of Fighting Series)

AOF Robert.png

Robert Garcia is the son of Alberto Garcia, a wealthy Italian businessman and best friend of Takuma Sakazaki, the master of Kyokugenryu Karate. Alberto persuaded Takuma to teach Robert discipline through Kyokugenryu. While living with his new sensei, Robert quickly befriended Takuma's children, Ryo and Yuri. Ryo became his best friend, and Robert eventually developed romantic feelings for Yuri. He has held a special relationship with Yuri ever since he first met her, and would likely wed her if not for Takuma and Ryo, who either overprotect Yuri out of habit or suspect that Robert might take her for granted.

In Art of Fighting, Geese Howard secretly blackmailed Takuma into working for him after he kidnapped Yuri. Meanwhile, Ryo and Robert began searching Southtown's dojos, dives, and nightclubs for clues about Yuri's disappearance. In the process, they fought Southtown's toughest criminals, bouncers, and martial artists. They eventually learned that Mr. Big allegedly masterminded the kidnapping.

One of Mr. Big's henchmen led Ryo and Robert to Mr. Big, and Robert defeated him. When he demanded that Mr. Big release Yuri, Mr. Big sent them to a dojo where his henchman Mr. Karate purportedly held Yuri. Exhausted from his fight with Mr. Big, Robert stepped aside to let Ryo fight Mr. Karate. Ryo nearly used a haoushoukouken to finish him off, but Yuri, having escaped her captors unharmed, sneaked in and told Ryo not to harm him since Mr. Karate was really their father, Takuma. Then they had a joyous reunion.

After the events from Art of Fighting and Art of Fighting 2, Robert visited Mexico in Art of Fighting 3 to help Freya Lawrence, a childhood friend, save her brother Wyler. Wyler is attempting to perfect a drug that will enhance one's physical characteristics to superhuman levels. Robert beats Wyler, but due to the usage of the drug his mind has been destroyed. Freya, concerned for Wyler's well being, decides to stay with him in order to take care of him, and the adventure comes to an end.

Robert benefits from his father's wealth. He always wears fancy clothes and drives expensive cars. Despite Ryo and Takuma's constant scrutiny, he sometimes gives luxurious gifts to Yuri. Robert also has an air of cockiness due to his constant wealth, which is seen by his friend Ryo as a sign of rudeness since Ryo's family lives in constant poverty due to having their finances run the Kyokugenryu dojo.

His Kyokugenryu movelist operates on the principle of Ryugeki, a class lower than the Kou-Ou principle but higher than the Raiou principle. Robert's style focuses upon lethal kicks, his signature move being the genei-kyaku or spirit kick.

Ryo Sakazaki

Click here for more information about Ryo's other fighting game appearances.

SNK Portrait Ryo.png

Ryo Sakazaki (リョウ・サカザキ) is a practitioner of Kyokuganryu Karate and one of the main characters of the Art of Fighting and King of Fighters games. He is the son of Takuma Sakazaki, brother of Yuri Sakazaki and the best friend of Robert Garcia.

Story (in the Art of Fighting Series)

AOF Ryo.png

Ryo Sakazaki (リョウ・サカザキ, sometimes written as 坂崎 亮 or Sakazaki Ryō) is the main character in SNK's fighting game series Art of Fighting. His story begins in the first Art of Fighting in a traditional damsel in distress story. His sister Yuri is kidnapped by Mr. Big, a local criminal mastermind. With the help of best friend and rival Robert Garcia, Ryo manages to confront Mr. Big, leading him to a karate dojo where a mysterious man (originally unnamed in the game, but was named "Mr. Karate" by fans, and officially named as such in later games) challenges the two to a fight. When Ryo prevails, he threatens to kill Mr. Karate unless he can know that Yuri is alive. As Ryo prepares to kill him, Yuri appears, telling Ryo to stop, for Mr. Karate was their father.

The realization that Mr. Karate was indeed Takuma was not in the original Art of Fighting ending (except for the SNES port of the game, where it was clearly shown), but was merely speculation that was made official in the introduction to the second game, when Takuma was formally introduced. In the second game, Takuma reveals how he became Mr. Karate: when Geese Howard wanted Takuma to kill Jeff Bogard, adoptive father to Andy and Terry Bogard. Takuma refused, and in order to force Takuma to cooperate, Yuri was kidnapped. Takuma was forced to do things that were against his moral standards through repeated threats to kill Yuri, including fighting his two students. With the Sakazaki family reunited, the family, along with Robert, focused on exacting their revenge on Geese, and providing justice to all others who were wronged by him. Part of this preparation included, to Ryo's initial opposition, teaching Yuri the Kyokugen techniques.

Although their plan was successful to an extent, their victory was short-lived: Geese had managed to escape, and had ordered the killing of Jeff (but had killed Jeff by himself later). This ending effectively closed out the Art of Fighting series and brought forth the beginning of the Fatal Fury story, one that does not directly involve Ryo.

In the third game to the series, Art of Fighting 3, Ryo's role was largely insignificant, as he acts as a supporting character to Robert Garcia. However, one plot thread from that game that carried over into the King of Fighters series was the introduction of Kasumi Todoh, the daughter of Ryuhaku Todoh, whom Ryo fought and defeated in the first Art of Fighting.

SNK Portrait Todo.png

Ryuhaku Todoh (藤堂竜白) is the father of Kasumi Todoh and the creator of his own fighting school: Todoh style karate.

Story (in the Art of Fighting Series)

AOF Todo.png

Ryuhaku Todoh is the creator and main teacher of Todoh-style karate, which derives its style from Aikido and Kendo. Todoh had a long-standing rivalry with disciples of the Kyokugenryu school of karate and considers them a threat to his style of teaching in terms of profits as well as personal animosity dating back to a rivalry with Takuma Sakazaki when both men were very young.

On his quest to find his younger sister Yuri, who had been abducted by Mr. Big under Geese Howard's orders, Ryo Sakazaki blatantly attacked Todoh at his school and fought him to interrogate him about the whereabouts of his sister. After Ryo easily defeated Todoh, he was humiliated and saw his school's finances as well as his attendance at his schools suffer. After the loss, Todoh went into hiding and hasn't been seen since. Because of his disappearance, his daughter Kasumi went on a personal quest to not only try to look for her father but to gain revenge on Ryo and all Kyokugenryu disciples to try to reclaim her family's honor.

Ryuhaku Todoh only appears in the first Art of Fighting game and is simply referred to as Todo. He had only one single special move in that game.

He is also the only character from Art of Fighting that did not reappear in Art of Fighting 2, but 10 years later, he reappeared on Capcom vs. SNK 2 finally as a non-vs-mode-only character.

SNK Portrait Takuma.png

Takuma Sakazaki (タクマ・サカザキ) is the most established known Kyokugenryu Karate practitioner and the father of Ryo Sakazaki as well as Yuri Sakazaki. His distinguishing feature is an X-shaped scar on his right pectoral.

Story (in the Art of Fighting Series)

AOF Takuma.png

Takuma Sakazaki is an somewhat eccentric character. He is donning a tengu mask and insists he's Mr. Karate, and delivering speeches that are supposed to rally morale, but often make him look silly. Takuma is the most established known Kyokugenryu Karate practitioner, and he is the only one in the discipline who can make full use of the discipline's most difficult moves (namely the Shoran Kyaku), available only in the Shoran principle of Kyokugenryu Karate.

In the midst of Takuma's aim to spread the Kyokugenryu discipline, crime started infesting Southtown, and Geese Howard made himself the de facto boss of the city. Unwilling to live with it, Takuma fought his way through lackeys and stooges and confronted Geese himself, demanding that he put an end to the tyranny. Geese replied with threats against Takuma's children, knowing that they meant the world to him. Now with Takuma dancing at his fingertips, Geese forced him to work for him. In order to preserve his honor, Takuma donned a tengu mask and formed another persona: "Mr. Karate."

While Geese was out on business, Mr. Big was in charge. In order to keep Takuma firmly under his control, Mr. Big had Yuri kidnapped. Unfortunately, that move caused Ryo and Robert to tear up Southtown in search of her and Takuma. When Robert got to Mr. Big and defeated him, Big called for Mr. Karate, and he came out to battle Ryo by Robert's favor because he was already exhausted. Although Ryo won, he threatened to kill Mr. Karate if he didn't tell him where Takuma and Yuri were. Yuri stopped Ryo from killing their father, and they had a joyous reunion.
