The fifth chapter takes place in the Holy Emperor Cross Mausoleum (聖帝十字陵), ruled by Seitei (Holy Emperor) Souther. In Black Belt, Souther's appearance is modified to that of a woman, as are all of his soldiers. Therefore, the common enemies that make up the Holy Emperor's Army (聖帝軍) in Hokuto no Ken are black women in Black Belt. These enemies move quickly in an attempt to crowd you and occasionally jump, but they don't attack while doing so. They simply punch on the ground, so they can be easily dispatched with some kicks. They will sometimes jump up on structures in the stage's background, punching you if you dare to follow them. Don't bother following them unless there aren't any enemies rushing in from either side of the screen, as this will only give them an opportunity to punch you as you jump up.

Sub-bosses[edit]

Flamethrower Troops

There are three sets of sub-bosses in this chapter, made up of three pairs of Flamethrower Troops (following the theme of the rest of the chapter, these soldiers become women carrying flamethrowers in Black Belt). The flamethrowers act in much the same way as the throwing stars did in the previous chapter, launching fireballs that fly at you in a straight line from either side of the screen. Additionally, these fireballs may fly at you at different heights, so it is important that you time your jumps so as to dodge both enemies' attacks. After dodging, aim a jumping kick at either enemy, then continue to focus your attacks on the same enemy in order to balance the fight. Like the common enemies, the Flamethrower Troops will occasionally jump onto structures in the background, gaining higher ground, but as they can not aim their fireballs downward, this shouldn't intimidate you. After they launch a fireball from their new location, simply follow them up with a jumping kick.

Once all three pairs of Flamethrower Troops are defeated, you'll have to take down a few more common enemies before facing their boss.

Boss: Souther[edit]

Holy Emperor Souther is the boss of the penultimate chapter in Hokuto no Ken. In Black Belt, this role is taken by Rita, an expert martial artist and consequently the bodyguard of Wang, the game's final boss. Souther and Rita are unique in that you can't damage them with the standard flurry of punches or kicks. You must perform specific attacks in a specific order to make any progress here, made all the more difficult by the boss' attacks, one of which is a jumping kick. Below is a list of Souther's/Rita's weak spots and the ways in which they can be hit.

  1. The first weak spot is the head. Use a standard kick or, if you prefer, a jumping kick.
  2. The second weak spot is the chest. Use a punch.
  3. The third weak spot is the waist. Use a crouching punch or alternatively, punch them while they descend from their jumping kick.
  4. The fourth weak spot is the legs. Use a crouching kick.

Once this list is completed, Souther/Rita should be at half health. Repeat the sequence in order to deplete their health completely, though this won't finish them off; punch or kick them as they descend from a jumping kick in order to do the deed. Kenshiro will then perform the Sattva Fist (北斗有情拳 Hokuto Ujo Ken?), taught to him by Toki in the chapter prior, to kill Souther. In Black Belt, Riki will knock Rita down using a similar attack, allowing him to continue to the final boss.
