The Dutch are relatively new to the game - arriving at independence in the early 1600s and breaking off of a the German civilization called the Holy Roman Empire. Dutch independence was not granted by the Germans until 1648 following the 30 years war (1618 -1648) (the Dutch had been at war for their independence since the mid 1500s). Conflicts with the English soon after the Dutch gained their independence lead to a loss of territory in North America. In 1664 AD, what is now parts of the states of New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware were handed over to the English.

Part of New York was ruled by a united group of Native American tribes called the Iroquois Confederacy. The most important city controlled by the Native Americans was Mohawk (a made-up name). Other cities include Pavonia, located West of New Amsterdam and East of The Great Lakes (which can be seen in the Apolyton real world maps). Mohican was located on or near the site for Albany.

After the Dutch lost New Netherland/New York, they went on to colonize and build up what is now Indonesia; its capital was called Batavia, but is now part of the city of Jakarta.

The default game begins in 4,000 B.C., so the Dutch are very new to the time line. Some parts of the dutch colonial empire are still found on the North American map with 6 cities: Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Maarten, Albina, and Parmaribo. Permanent French garrison exists on its land.

The French, the Dutch's primary competitor, will have five cities left on the map in 2010, but despite being a new civilization, the Dutch founded the Dutch East India Company wonder in the early 1600s before the holy Roman empire granted it independence in 1648. Along with the Netherlands a new nation called Switzerland was also carved out of the German civilization called holy Roman empire. Switzerland was not a playable civilization but can use the non-playable Barbarian entities.

The last major colony of the Dutch empire to break away and be independent was Dutch Guiana now called Suriname which shares a border with Brazillian civilization. In the 1600s the dutch occupied a portion of Brazil near the city of Recife the dutch also breifly occupied what is now Taiwan.

By 1700 AD, Cape colony was also becoming a focus of the Dutch empire. Its capital was Cape Town. The dutch lost control of Cape colony in a world treaty in 1815 after France's leader Napoleon was defeated. In the 1820s, Brazil became an independent civilization. The Zulu civilization sprang up briefly near Cape Town, but the Dutch continued to have independent colonies there until 1902, such as Johannesburg.

World War II, from 1938 to the early 1940s, caused the eventual loss of Indonesia. Some dutch order was restored just after 1945 but did not last. In 1975 Suriname became independent. Eventually Indonesia went on to annex the only Portuguese territory on the South-East Asia map in the year 1976. In 2002 that territory was independent and non-playable, so the barbarians use it.

Campaigns[edit]

Omni Australia map[edit]

On this world map the Dutch are one of the least powerful. The Australian civilization is the most powerful and they get three city placements:

  • Lalindi: 027,001.
  • Seba: 031,003.
  • Kupang: 037,002.

This part of the Dutch empire evolved into the Indonesian civilization some time after 1945 AD. To play this colony to its furthest extent, you have to load the South East Asia map. It would have been possible to include Indonesia on the Australian map because it's only 100 by 200 tiles in size and adding an extra 100 in size to the north is playable without a game upgrade. Unfortunately, no one ever created such a map in the early days when Call to power was a new game.
