Akuma - Ratio 4

CVS Akuma.jpg

Click here for more information about Akuma's other fighting game appearances.

Akuma has always been the quintessential "secret character" of many Capcom fighting games. Known as Gouki in Japan, he is the brother of Ken and Ryu's master, Gouken. Gouki and Gouken learned their lethal martial arts techniques from a master known only as Goutetsu. While Gouken proceeded to teach his form of martial arts to students with the assassination techniques removed, Gouki steeped himself further in the art form, sacrificing his own humanity to achieve killing perfection. Shortly after Ken and Ryu parted ways with their sensei, Gouki attacked his brother to prove how foolish Gouken had been. When the battle was over, Gouken was dead. While Ken became determined to track Gouki down and extract revenge for the murder of Ken's master, Ryu has walked a fine line between becoming the greatest martial artist, and plunging into the darkness that consumed Gouki.

Akuma appears, once again, as a very secret fighter in the original Capcom vs. SNK. Akuma will only challenge those fighters who he deems worthy of battle. Players are required to amass a significant number of Groove Points by the end of the game in order to prove their worthiness. He returns in Capcom vs. SNK 2 as a regular competitor, but it is his true form, Shin Akuma, that remains hidden for players to unlock and do battle against.

Pro version changes

  • Akuma can combo into a Shakunetsu Hadouken from a crouching Arcade-Button-HPunch.png.
  • Akuma an cancel his forward jump Arcade-Button-HPunch.png or Arcade-Button-HKick.png in mid air into his level 3 Tenma Gou Zankuu.
  • He loses the Zugai Hasatsu hop kick. Consequently, it is much easier to execute Shun Goku Satsu.
  • Timing on the Messatsu Gou Shouryuu juggle has changed. You must hit your opponent while they are very high in the air for the juggle to connect. It only juggles as a level 2 or 3 (move can still be juggled after low hitting knockdowns, such as after a crouching HK).

Balrog - Ratio 2

CVS Balrog.jpg

Click here for more information about Balrog's other fighting game appearances.

Balrog (originally known as M. Bison in Japan, something of an homage to Mike Tyson but changed outside of Japan to avoid any legal problems), is a henchman of M. Bison's Shadowloo army. While M. Bison and his other aids appear as Ratio 3 characters in Capcom vs. SNK, Balrog's Ratio 2 reflects his low-level status in the crime organization. M. Bison recruited Balrog when he was disgraced by having his boxing champ title revoked due to cheating. With nowhere else to turn, and Bison offering a lot of money for his services, he accepted. It wasn't until he meets another Street Fighter known as Birdie that thoughts of taking over the organization would cross his mind.

The Normal version of Balrog, as well as his Capcom vs. SNK 2 iteration, reflect the style of Balrog that is available in Street Fighter Alpha 3, where Balrog serves as the second to last fight to nearly every contestant. As a result, he has a variety of charge punch moves, and a Level 3 only Super Combo. The Extra version of Balrog is a limited version that harkens back to Street Fighter II Champion Edition, when he first appeared as a selectable character by players, with the addition of his single Super Combo from SSF2T.

Pro version changes

  • Balrog's crouching Arcade-Button-LPunch.png and Arcade-Button-LKick.png are much slower and harder to combo off of with normal straight punches
  • Normal Balrog seems to combo easier with his Dashing Ground punches. Extra Balrog is much more fair now.
  • Extra Balrog's Final Punch (hold for 60 seconds) does reduced damage compared to the original version.

Cammy White - Ratio 1

Chun-Li - Ratio 2

CVS Chun-Li.jpg

Click here for more information about Chun Li's other fighting game appearances.

Chun-Li is an agent of the Interpol (International Police) who is assigned to the task force responsible for tracking and shutting down M. Bison's international crime syndicate Shadowloo. It's no coincidence that Chun-Li engages her job with determination; M. Bison is somehow responsible for the death of Chun-Li's father, and she intends to find out how. Knowing M. Bison's penchant for recruiting the strongest fighters in the world, she joins tournaments, not only to prove her title as the strongest woman in the world, but to get closer to the elusive M. Bison. Along the way, she frequently works alongside United States Air Force Colonel Guile, who also seeks to capture Bison in order to find out the location of his missing commander, and best friend, Charlie.

Normal Chun-Li most closely reflects the set of abilities that she has in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, with the addition of two Super Combos that she acquired in the Street Fighter Alpha series. Extra Chun-Li is parred down to her Street Fighter II Champion Edition version with the addition of her SSF2T Super Combo and a new variety of Super Combo that mimics Ryu's Shinkuu Tatsumaki Senpukyaku Super Combo. Extra Chun-Li can execute her Spinning Bird Kick in the traditional fashion, or delay pressing Kick by a split second and pop up in the air while she spins. Interestingly, in Capcom vs. SNK 2 she reflects her 3rd Strike incarnation so she is the only Capcom character to not combine their normal and extra mode into one.

Pro version changes

  • Chun-Li's Hyakuretsu Kyaku comes out much slower than before, and you must tap the buttons more rapidly than in the original version.
  • Chun-Li can no longer juggle opponents with back-to-back Level 1 Hazan Tenshoukyakus in the corner (however, she can still juggle opponents once in the corner after connecting with a Senretsu Kyaku).

Dan - Ratio 1

Dhalsim - Ratio 1

CVS Dhalsim.jpg

Click here for more information about Dhalsim's other fighting game appearances.

Dhalsim is a mystic and master of Yoga. Having reached enlightenment, he gained exceptional control over his mind and body, allowing him to perform moves which appear inhuman or impossible, such as stretching his limbs and breathing fire. Dhalsim is a pacifist at heart, and fights only to earn what money he can to send to his impoverished village in India. He also seeks to aid all those who he encounters, should they need his help. Although he is not officially linked to any other fighter, he has reportedly aided Ryu in his quest to distance himself from the Dark Hadou which threatens to erase Ryu's humanity. He has also partnered with troubled souls like Blanka in Street Fighter EX3 series, and Sabertooth in X-Men vs. Street Fighter.

Choosing between Normal and Extra Dhalsim is essentially like choosing between A-ISM and X-ISM Dhalsim in Street Fighter Alpha 3. One version reflects his Street Fighter Alpha series of moves while the other more accurately reflects his Super Street Fighter II Turbo moves. When he returns in Capcom vs. SNK 2, he is far more like his Alpha series self.

Pro version changes

  • Dhalsim's Yoga Tempest Super Combo inflicts more damage than it did originally.
  • Dhalsim's drill attacks have lowered priority.
  • Extra Dhalsim's Yoga Inferno does more damage while retaining the same priority as before.
  • Dhalsim recovers slightly faster from a Yoga Teleport.

E. Honda - Ratio 2

CVS E. Honda.jpg

Click here for more information about E. Honda's other fighting game appearances.

Of all of the original World Warriors from Street Fighter II, Edmond Honda has typically been on the bottom of the popularity list. The Capcom vs. SNK marks his first appearance outside of the Street Fighter II series, other than his inclusion in the third and final Street Fighter Alpha series. Nevertheless, Honda has always had a small, but loyal crowd of players who enjoy using him. Surprised to find out that the world outside of Japan thinks little of Sumo Wrestling, Honda is determined to prove that sumos are indeed the best fighters in the whole world.

Normal E. Honda plays very much like his Street Fighter Alpha 3 version with his additional throw move, and Level 3 only Super Combo. Extra E. Honda, on the other hand, has fewer moves and reflects his Super Street Fighter II iteration, with the addition of his Super Combo from SSF2T. In Capcom vs. SNK 2, he plays like his Normal version.

Pro version changes

  • E.Honda's Oni Musou Super Combo now air juggles.
  • E.Honda's Hyakuretsu Harite comes out much slower than before, and you must tap the buttons more rapidly than in the original version.

Guile - Ratio 2

CVS Guile.jpg

Click here for more information about Guile's other fighting game appearances.

Guile is a colonel in the United States Air Force. He was trained in hand to hand combat at an early age by his commanding officer Charlie. The student/mentor relationship became a close friendship as the two continued to work side by side. One day, Charlie was given an assignment to work with the international police agency Interpol, to help with an air reconnaissance mission over the region of Thailand where M. Bison was reported to be building his underground crime syndicate Shadowloo. Charlie went off on that mission... and never returned. Getting no assistance from his superiors, Guile eventually began to seek information on his friend's whereabouts on his own. He carries Charlie's dog tags with him at all times. Eventually, he would work with Interpol agent Chun-Li, who also sought revenge on M. Bison for the death of her father.

Normal Guile is very much like his Street Fighter Alpha 3 iteration, with the replacement of his Sonic Hurricane Super Combo with an original Super Combo. Extra Guile plays more like he does in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. He is the fusion of both styles, along with the return of his Sonic Hurricane, in Capcom vs. SNK 2

Pro version changes

  • Juggle combos in the corner have been altered. It's still possible to juggle a Level 1 Total Wipeout Super Combo into the Level 2 Somersault Strike, but is no longer possible to juggle Level 1 Super Combos over and over again in SNK-Groove.
  • Guile's Sonic Boom has a much longer delay than before.
  • Guile's Arcade-Button-LKick.png Somersault Kick has decreased priority above him; it is possible to knock him out of it with crossups or attacks that land on top of Guile.

Ken Masters - Ratio 2

Capcom vs. SNK Pro/Ken

M. Bison - Ratio 3

CVS M. Bison.jpg

Click here for more information about M. Bison's other fighting game appearances.

M. Bison is the would-be dictator of the world. His ambition is to take over the biggest governments in the world by planting members of his underground crime syndication, Shadowloo, in important law enforcement positions. Shadowloo is into everything, from drugs to weapon trafficking to money laundering and forgery. When he learns about the competitions that have been sponsored by Geese Howard, he is intrigued at the thought of a potential partner in crime, and someone he can use to help locate powerful fighters fit for joining his Shadowloo army. M. Bison wields a power that he refers to as Psycho Power, to launch devastatingly painful attacks at his opponents.

While Extra M. Bison plays very closely to his Super Street Fighter II Turbo version, Normal M. Bison is a more of an original design. He possesses a few moves that are unique to Capcom vs. SNK, like Psycho Vanish which cancels projectiles, and Psycho Impact which is a rushing punch attack. When both forms are fused in Capcom vs. SNK 2, he keeps the Psycho Vanish attack, but trades Psycho Impact for his traditional Psycho Crusher.

Pro version changes

  • M. Bison has an improved and faster universal roll with quicker recovery.
  • The Somersault Skull Diver has more horizontal movement; after pressing any punch in mid air you can retreat quite a distance with his arms stretched out.
  • Extra M. Bison recovers faster from the Psycho Crusher move.
  • Extra M. Bison's Devil Reverse now hits in front of your opponent instead of behind.
  • If blocked, the delay of the Arcade-Button-LKick.png Double Knee Press has been increased.
  • If his Level 3 Knee Press Nightmare Super Combo is blocked, the final three hits don't conncect, allowing the opponent time to retaliate with a projectile or Super Combo on the rebound.
  • Slighly less delay on a blocked Arcade-Button-LPunch.png version of his 2 hit Psycho Impact. M. Bison bounces back slightly after both hits connect if performed correctly.

Morrigan - Ratio 2

CVS Morrigan.jpg

Click here for more information about Morrigan's other fighting game appearances.

Morrigan is the sole member of Capcom's roster to represent the Darkstalkers. In fact, she is the only non-human included in the game (Morrigan is a succubus), and only appears in the first Capcom vs. SNK as a hidden character, mirroring SNK's Nakoruru, the sole representative from Samurai Shodown (until Haohmaru is added in Capcom vs. SNK 2. She retains most of her signature moves from her appearance in the Darkstalkers series. Morrigan fights for nothing more than the sheer excitement of it. Her wings (on her both her back and head) can separate from her body and take the form of bats. She is actually far more powerful than even she realizes, having had her power divided into thirds. One third remains in her, one third resides in her father, and the final third was stored away in another dimension until it gained physical form and returned in Vampire Savior as Lilith, seeking to reunite with Morrigan.

Pro version changes

  • The damage delivered by her Level 3/MAX supers has been increase, especially for Darkness Illusion.
  • Her Darkness Illusion Super Combo goes full screen.
  • Morrigan has a longer delay on her ground Soul Fist.
  • Morrigan's mid attacks have reduced range, forcing you to poke with her hard attacks at a distance which makes her chains harder to do.
  • She can only juggle off a Arcade-Button-LPunch.png Shadow Blade into her Cardinal Blade Super Combo with Level 2 and 3. Level 1 will miss, decreasing her effectiveness in SNK Grove.

Ryu - Ratio 2

CVS Ryu.jpg

Click here for more information about Ryu's other fighting game appearances.

Ryu is Capcom's representation of the ultimate street fighting warrior. Raised as an orphan by master Gouken, he befriended a young boy named Ken that joined them. Together, they trained under Gouken in an ancient and lethal form of martial arts. Night and day, Ken and Ryu trained until they reach adulthood and it was time to explore the world. Ken returned home to the United States, while Ryu wandered around, looking to test his abilities against the best fighters in the world. When we reached the champion bout of the first world fighting tournament, he was pitted against the Muay Thai King, Sagat. He was about to lose the battle when he gave into the dark side of his martial arts, and executed a devastating Shoryuken that left a huge scar on Sagat's chest. He spent the next several years waging an inner battle with himself to control the Dark Hadou. He enters this competition very at peace with himself, and looking forward to facing the legendary Kyo Kusanagi who he heard so much about. He plays like his Street Fighter Alpha 3 version, and has no Extra mode due to the presence of Evil Ryu.

Pro version changes

  • Opponents can trade hits with Ryu's Arcade-Button-LPunch.png Shoryuken as easy as in SSF2T now. To hit this consistently with Ryu, you now have to wait until the opponent is very deep before executing the move.
  • Shin Shroyuken juggles, but only for air counter damage instead of the full damage it used to do. If you combo off of the crouching Arcade-Button-HKick.png, you will do a very small amount of damage. The same is true for a Arcade-Button-LPunch.png Shoryuken. You can still combo for the full damage off of a very deep Arcade-Stick-DL.png+Arcade-Button-HKick.png, or crouching Arcade-Button-LKick.png, but even his cross up Arcade-Button-HKick.png, standing Arcade-Button-HPunch.png, Shin Shroyuken combo will not connect (the standing Arcade-Button-HPunch.png pushes your opponent too far away.)
  • His Shinkuu Tatsumaki Senpukyaku has been improved; it does more damage and has better priority on the ground.

Ryu, Evil - Ratio 4

CVS Evil Ryu.jpg

Click here for more information about Evil Ryu's other fighting game appearances.

Evil Ryu is the representation of Ryu when he gives in to the Dark Hadou, the murderous intent that is inherent in the form of martial arts that he practices. Akuma is an example of a man who has completely and willingly sacrificed his humanity in pursuit of fighting perfection, and has become a soulless killer. Ryu hangs on the razor's edge of remaining in control of his mind, and losing himself to the Dark Hadou. Embracing the Dark Hadou substantially increases a fighter's power, and opens new abilities, such as the Shun Goku Satsu killing technique. By the time Ryu enters the Capcom vs. SNK tournament, he feels very much in control of himself, but the proximity of the Orochi power emanating from Iori triggers a relapse in Ryu's ability to control his power, and he becomes a raging warrior that only the best fighters earn the right to compete against.

Pro version changes

  • Evil Ryu does increased damge over the previous game. His hard attacks seem to take off as much as solid ratio 2 combos.
  • Ashura Warp is faster to execute and recovers sooner.
  • Timing on his Messatsu Goushouryu Super Combo juggle has changed. You now have to hit your opponent while they are very high in the air for the juggle to connect. It only juggles as a level 2 or 3 (Messatsu Goushouryu can still be juggled after low hitting knockdowns, such as after a crouching Arcade-Button-HKick.png, or a Level 1 Shinkuu Hadouken in the corner).

Sagat - Ratio 3

CVS Sagat.jpg

Click here for more information about Sagat's other fighting game appearances.

Sagat worked his way up the fighting championship ladder all his life, and enjoyed a long stay at the top as an unbeatable force… until the day he faced a young inexperienced warrior named Ryu. Towering over the determined fighting, victory was within Sagat's grasp, an inconsequential victory to add on to a list of hundreds, but it was stolen away from him. He couldn't be sure, but he sensed an inhuman power awake in the boy, and the skin on his chest was cut wide open by a force exerted by Ryu when he performed a dragon punch that knocked Sagat out cold. Broken and defeated, not just in his body, but also in his mind, he accepted M. Bison's offer to be a personal body guard with no other direction to turn. But inside, he focused constantly on the day when he would meet and rematch Ryu and prove once and for all who the better fighter really is.

Normal Sagat plays like his Street Fighter Alpha versions, but he lacks the Tiger Cannon Super Combo. On the other hand, Extra Sagat plays very must like his Super Street Fighter II iteration, but with the addition of not only the regular Tiger Cannon super, but also a Ground Tiger Cannon which he gained in the Street Fighter EX series. When he returns in Capcom vs. SNK 2, he keeps his Alpha motions while gaining access to all four Super Combos.

Pro version changes

  • The disparity between Sagat's fast and slow Tiger Shots has been increased.
  • Extra Sagat combo into a Super Combo after the second hit of his standing Arcade-Button-HKick.png in addition to the first hit. This allows for jumping Arcade-Button-HKick.png, standing Arcade-Button-HKick.png double hit, level 3/MAX Tiger Cannon super for a lot of damage.
  • Sagat's Tiger Uppercut has improved priority, speed, and recovery time.
  • The first hit of Sagat's Tiger Crush knocks down the opponent even if the second hit misses.

Sakura - Ratio 1

CVS Sakura.jpg

Click here for more information about Sakura's other fighting game appearances.

Sakura was once an ordinary school girl who liked to be the best at whatever she could. The competitive spirit was very much alive in her, but she had no inspiration to channel it into until she saw a warrior with a red headband apprehend an armed robber with his bear hands. She asked the warrior's name and he replied Ryu and went on his way. Ever since that moment, Sakura was sure that she wanted to become a great fighter and learn from Ryu. She trained very hard on her own, attempting to master the moves she saw him perform strictly from her memory, and she actually succeeded in replicating many of his attacks. But she knew she needed to find him in order to completely master those techniques, so she launched on a quest to find her, dragging her poor schoolmate and friend along with her.

While Extra Sakura plays very much like the Street Fighter Alpha version that made her a popular character, Normal Sakura is a rather original design. Her ki does not create a projectile, but rather a spark that stays in front of her. Her dashing uppercut stays more on the ground. And her tornado kick has been replaced by a hopping spin kick that can be followed up with another attack. While her Capcom vs. SNK 2 character plays a little more like her Alpha style, she is still predominantly an original design.

Pro version changes

  • Sakura's standing Arcade-Button-HKick.png is much faster and has better priority.
  • Sakura has two new jumping Arcade-Button-HPunch.png attacks; the normal one hits straight out and is good for air to air, but not for jump ins, while pressing Arcade-Stick-Down.png+Arcade-Button-HPunch.png causes her to do her old two fisted smackdown. It knocks down on contact (much like Kyo's) so you can't combo after it.
  • Sakura has better anti air priority on her Arcade-Button-LPunch.png dragon punches in both Normal and Extra.

Vega - Ratio 3

CVS Vega.jpg

Click here for more information about Vega's other fighting game appearances.

Where Vega (known as Balrog in Japan) got his love for murder is unknown. As the product of the union between a Japanese martial artist and a Spanish bull fighter, Vega claims a vast heritage, which he puts to deadly use. Wealthy, and full of opportunity, his enjoyment of murder is only topped by his own vanity. He attracted the attention of M. Bison, who saw his lust for killing, and assigned him to orchestrate the assassinations conducted by the Shadowloo dolls. One of the only missions that Vega has ever failed is the tracking down and killing of the one doll who ever broke free of Bison's control: Cammy.

Normal Vega represents his Street Fighter Alpha series style, with all of the extra moves and Super Combos that he gains. Extra Vega is limited, closer in presentation to his Super Street Fighter II Turbo style. In Capcom vs. SNK 2, he has access to all of his Alpha moves.

Pro version changes

  • Vega's standard jump is faster.
  • His jumping Arcade-Button-HKick.png crosses up more easily.
  • Improved Speed off the wall, all moves off the wall are much faster than before.
  • There are changes to 3 of his normal attacks. Normal Vega's Arcade-Stick-Right.png+Arcade-Button-HKick.png is faster and has a new blur animation to his foot. His jumping straight up Arcade-Button-LKick.png sticks straight out. His standing Arcade-Button-HKick.png is new and can combo off of jumping Arcade-Button-HKick.png.
  • Vega can two-in-one into his specials such as the wall grab out of Arcade-Stick-DL.png+Arcade-Button-HKick.png. He can also two-in-one out of a crouching Arcade-Button-HPunch.png.

Zangief - Ratio 2

CVS Zangief.jpg

Click here for more information about Zangief's other fighting game appearances.

Zangief became the most famous wrestler in his home country of Russia. He became known as the Red Cyclone. His love for wrestling was only surpassed by his love for his home country, and he was determined to bring it fame and recognition by competing in tournaments around the world. For one reason or another, Zangief routinely ends up in tournaments that involve M. Bison's search for superior warriors, but he's so concerned with impressing the audience and making a name for Russia, that he tends to be oblivious to the events going on around him.

Normal Zangief is based on his Street Fighter Alpha series appearance, while Extra Zangief has only those abilities that he had in Street Fighter II Turbo and his single super combo from SSF2T. In Capcom vs. SNK 2, he retains all of his Alpha series abilities.

Pro version changes

  • Zangief's Aerial Russian Slam Super Combo does significantly less damage than before.
  • Zangief is the anti air king; his standing Arcade-Button-HKick.png has very high priority now, even better than before.
  • Double Lariats are more effective against ground attacks and come out faster.
  • His Level 3/Max Final Atomic Buster Super Combo does much more damage than before.
  • Zangief's Banishing Flat is faster, and he can sometimes link it with a Arcade-Button-LPunch.png Screw Pile Driver after it hits or is blocked (the only way out of this is to jump at the right moment). It also has improved speed and better priority (although it is still not as effective as it was in SSF2T.)
