Ace Combat, originally known as Air Combat, is a series of twelve first-person shooter arcade games that were released by Namco between 1992 and 2009; the original title was an arcade game that ran upon the company's System 21 hardware, and was later ported to the PlayStation in 1995 under the same name, Air Combat, however additional features were added. The second title in the series, Air Combat 22, so named because it ran on the company's System 22 hardware, was released in 1995 and again ported to the PlayStation under the title of Ace Combat 22 - and it was later followed up by Ace Combat 2 in 1997, and Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere in 2000, for the PlayStation, along with Ace Combat 04: The Shattered Skies in 2001, Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War in 2004, and Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War in 2006, for the PlayStation 2, Ace Combat Advance in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance, Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception in 2006 for the PlayStation Portable, Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation in 2007 for the Xbox 360 and lastly Ace Combat XI: Skies of Incursion in 2009 for the IPhone. Next to the Pac-Man series, it is Namco's longest-running franchise, as the World Stadium series ended back in 1999.

The aircraft in the series are unaffected by things like weather and the pilots are unaffected by G-forces and other variables; the aircraft also have many missiles and bombs, far more than any real-life aircraft. To compensate, missiles will not destroy every target in a single hit nor will they track targets as tenaciously as in real life - and the world of Ace Combat is often named "Strangereal", which is composed of several nations. The most notable of these include, but are not limited to, the Belkan Federation, the Osean Federation, the Union of Yuktobanian Republics, the Republic of Ustio, the Kingdom of Sapin, and the twin republics of Aurelia and Leasath; the series has also often combined a present-day setting with its semi-futuristic technology and its mythological background. Many of the player characters have been referred to as "demons" - and one (fictitious) legend, the Demon of Razgriz, plays a pivotal role in Ace Combat 5. According to the legend, he was from the North Sea, and would show himself when there was great upheaval in the world.
