The Fallout series is a franchise of post-apocalyptic role-playing games created by Interplay, the IP subsequently purchased by Bethesda Softworks.
Story
The games revolve around the occurrence of a global nuclear event known as the Great War. Worldwide shortage of resources such as petroleum and uranium resulted in the Resource Wars, a series of conflicts between the United States, Canada, China, and European powers.
These events culminated in the breakdown of the United Nations and deployment of nuclear missiles at and by the United States. Prior to this, some citizens had elected to purchase space in underground vaults, most of which shielded those within from the nuclear event. Those who survived outside of the vaults or who emerged from underground created new communities, rebuilding in what remained of the country.
Games
The first two titles in the series, Fallout and Fallout 2, were developed by Interplay's Black Isle Studios. Micro Forté and 14 Degrees East assisted in the development of Fallout Tactics, a tactical role-playing game. Interplay then released Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, an action game with RPG elements for PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
Bethesda continued the series with first/third person shooter Fallout 3 and Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas, mobile games Fallout Shelter and Fallout Shelter Online, first/third person shooter Fallout 4, and multiplayer role-playing game Fallout 76. Several roleplaying, table top, and board games were also published, including Fallout: The Board Game, Fallout: Wasteland Warfare, Fallout: New California, Fallout: Wasteland Warfare Roleplaying Game, Fallout Shelter: The Board Game, and Fallout: The Roleplaying Game.
