Mario Party is a game series that has the players playing as characters from the Mario series on a giant board game. The objective of the game is to collect the most stars within a set amount of turns. This is normally achieved by trading in coins that are earned by winning minigames.

With the release of a new version of Mario Party new mini games are added along with a graphics upgrade.

Traditionally every game board has a unique aspect that modifies how the game is played. This varies by random events, requirements, abilities, and the locations of permanent NPCs like Boo, a ghost that can steal stars and coins. Because of all the random things that can happen winning the game also has some degree of luck to it.

Because people were actually hurting their hands to get higher scores at the games that focused on getting a high rate of analog rotations within a specific time limit in the first Mario Party this type of game play was removed from future sequels. This type of game play was replaced by games focused towards rapidly pressing buttons.
