The Neo Geo Pocket was a handheld system that was primarily released in Japan, and saw very little distribution beyond. The system initially sold well, but was technologically eclipsed by the release of the Game Boy Color shortly after its release. SNK halted manufacturing of the NGP in 1999, and followed it up with the color-capable Neo Geo Pocket Color, which was backwards compatible with the original NGP games.

Though the system had a relatively short life for a handheld, there were some significant games released on the system such as Samurai Shodown, and King of Fighters R-1. In an effort not to alienate many of the consumers who bought an NGP shortly before the NGP Color was released, SNK programmed many of the color games to play properly on the original system. There are, however, notable exceptions such as Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure and SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium.
