The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld console developed by Nintendo and was released in March 2011. Its most notable feature is its ability to produce stereoscopic 3D effects without the need for any special glasses. It succeeds the Nintendo DS series of handhelds and features backward compatibility with almost all the Nintendo DS's catalog of games, including DSiWare and other DSi-specific software. In June, its first patch was made available, and the Nintendo eShop became its official online store for additional content. The Nintendo 3DS was officially unveiled on June 15, 2010 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

Released | 2012 |
During a Nintendo Direct broadcast on June 21, 2012, Nintendo announced the existence of the 3DS XL. This was a relatively minor change, increasing the overall size of the system, slightly improving the battery life, and making the screens 90% larger. The system came out July 28, 2012 in Japan and Europe and in August for America and Australia. In Japan and America, this date coincides with the release of the video game New Super Mario Bros. 2.
Nintendo 2DS | |

Manufacturer | Nintendo |
Released | 2013 |
The Nintendo 2DS has the same features as the 3DS except 3D viewing. It has a slate form factor rather than the clamshell design of the 3DS and the 3DS XL. It was released on October 12, 2013, the same day Pokémon X and Y was released.
StreetPass[edit]
StreetPass is a feature where the Nintendo 3DS system can automatically communicate with other Nintendo 3DS systems and exchange game data, while in sleep mode or playing a game. When a StreetPass is encountered, the notification LED will turn green. Up to 12 games can have StreetPass activated at the same time.
Play Coins[edit]
Play Coins can be earned by taking steps with the Nintendo 3DS in sleep mode. One coin is earned for 100 steps and up to 10 coins can be earned in a day. A maximum of 300 coins can be kept. Coins can be spent in compatible games for a variety of rewards and features.
Accessories[edit]
Circle Pad Pro[edit]
The Circle Pad Pro is an attachment that adds a second circle pad and the and shoulder buttons to the 3DS. A version was made for both the original and XL models.
NFC Reader/Writer[edit]
The NFC Reader/Writer is an accessory that adds amiibo support to the 3DS. The New Nintendo 3DS models have a built-in NFC reader on the lower screen.
