The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console that was released on March 3, 2017 and is the successor to the Wii U. It comes with two detachable controllers that are known as the Joy-Con. Games can be purchased physically from retail stores or digitally from the Nintendo eShop. The Switch supports three types of play modes.

  • TV mode - The console is placed in the dock that is connected to a TV.
  • Tabletop mode - The console is place on a surface with the stand out and controllers detached.
  • Handheld mode - The console is played portable with both controllers attached.

The back of game cases have icons that indicate which modes are supported. The Switch also supports amiibo figures for compatible games. A revision of the Switch was released in mid-August 2019 that featured an improved CPU resulting in better battery life.

The Nintendo Switch Lite is a version of the Switch that is dedicated to handheld play and was released on September 20, 2019. The console is smaller and the controllers cannot be detached.
